International attractions giant Merlin Entertainments is one of the new main stand-holders at this year’s WTM London – the leading global event for the travel industry.

The parent company of brands and resorts such as LEGOLAND parks, The Eye, Madame Tussauds, SEA LIFE and Warwick Castle has exhibited at WTM London before, but this year sees the company upgrade its presence to take advantage of the extra networking opportunities and heightened profile of being a main stand-holder.

Merlin Entertainments jumped to the top of the blue-chip leaderboard, advancing 9.6p to 467p, after broker Morgan Stanley said that it believes the theme park and hotel giant is close to confirming a new Legoland park in New York, which it said will add 8pc to its core “ebitda” earnings by 2020.

Reiterating his “overweight” rating for Merlin, analyst Jamie Rollo said that the company should have also benefited from a “staycation” bounce from squeezed UK households during the summer.

(ShareCast News) - In a look at the leisure sector, Morgan Stanley was positive on Ladbrokes, Whitbread and Merlin Entertainment with 'overweight' recommendations all round, but downgraded SSP Group and Paddy Power Betfair.

Merlin, which was given a 580p price target, is felt to be close to confirming a new Legoland Park for New York that it is estimated could add 8% to earnings per share when open by 2020.

"We think management also will confirm in October it is on track for its 2020 themed accommodation and Midway expansion targets."

'Strong summer for British tourism, says IHG'

Wake Up to Money presenter Sean Farrington asked IHG Chief Executive Keith Barr if, after the attacks in London and Manchester, he’d seen a similar hit to tourism in the UK, to that seen in France after terror attacks.

“We really haven’t (seen similar hits in London and Manchester)," Mr Barr said.

"It’s been driven a lot by currency movements, the UK is one of the most affordable destinations it’s been in years.

"While there’s always some inherent concerns with travel, people are bouncing back quite quickly after events. We’re seeing a very strong summer.”
