momentos : re 291

Thanks for the post , its quite a read. I must admit I had to go through it a couple of times and think another run through is in order, when my head stops hurting.

The phrase " The whole sprawling drama of business is of no interest to Barclays researchers .......... " is, I think, exactly what Nigel Lawson was getting at when he coined the phrase I plagiarised.

I like the analogy of the factory ships, which in itself has a hidden warning of this kind of investment practice, ie when the easy pickings run out there are too many funds chasing too little money.

To think less than 20 years ago everybody was worring about the power of George Soros's Quantum fund, although I am not sure if these " Quant " funds can be compared directly with the Hedge funds. In relation to BGI it seems he was a minnow.

As you said though, well worth the read, very informative.

wbj,o/t company sold off digital to concentrate on core businesses know and do best.Balance of witheld funds from sale less warranty claims payable anniversary 17 Feb.One mistake Star Wars turned into a disaster as did several other companies.Remarkable company & team.Tentative link with MPH in as much MPH rebuilding business post YSL to recovering lost ground in share price stakes.Went with my gut biggest core holdings @ 100p, first divi in the bank.Recovery well in process, strong growth, increasing divi all reflected in chart.Bags of potentential and very positive sentiment.Shares are cheap and can't see them hanging around 140p.Looking for 160p-225p.imho.

Yes agree MPH will fly when the time comes & not before time.I'm looking for breakout above 125p buys appearing 127p/128p upwards.Re-rating when it comes has potential to be vertical as in Harrier Jet.Can't wait for lift off here.Usual provisos with MPH & MM.

wbj, thank you for taking the time to look over numbers, providing interpretations and views for me.Interesting to consider with others,bullish-bearish and conrarian. My own thoughts are bullish on growth with increasing %this year & next, however, keep under constant review.

Marchpole has not performed according to predictions and as expected but I think it WILL.Fascinating how market can manipulate to trade within a very tight range & accomodate funds institutions enter stock & or accumulate at lower levels.

It has been difficult for me to guesstimate exact sum of parts during this transitional period to where MPH is now post YSL.Helpful when momentos, yourself and others provided numbers on such things as perfumes etc and information which otherwise would go undetected. My own feelings fwiw funds in MPH for both growth & % yield, favour how company has gone about global strategy, very interested on next aquisition & how strengthens UK side of business.reading views of others OB should be a minor blip on landscape if at all.I have strong feelings that share price has the potential to breakout explosively - never write MPH off.Sentiment/sp can turn on a sixpence.Logically all that Marchpole have to do is show new revenue stream replace that YSL loss actual & potential replace 100%+.Market having held MPH back boring investors into selling stock to funds, can manipulate much higher using technicals & triggers to what is fairer value. For me all signs are there, question of when not if.

Simply expressed thoughts & feelings.Set out my investment strategy for 2007, gut instinct playing an equal role as much as charts & research including number crunching by others. But for change of strategy including increase 150% in investment money in the market would have bought back & holding MPH.Looking forward to seeing return to good old days which means MPH back 150p-185p+.Thanks for comradie, humour and excellent research on thread. Good luck here.

I don't want to put a damper on the Barclays announcement, I am quite long in MPH, but it is not necessarily Barclays themselves investing or indeed one of their investment companys.

Seeing as the statement said that their holdings had passed through a notifiable percentage I suggest that it is small PIs like us who have pushed their nominee accounts collectively over the threshold.

I of course would like to be wrong and hope their overpaid teenage scribblers are even now plotting how to inject large ammounts of cash into MPH, but one must be realistic.

Lex

Had a quick look at the figures on the thread you suggested and the first thing thats hits you is the fact that the writer forecasts a operating profit of over 14% compared with the actual achieved of 10% for the last financial year. I would go along with revenue of around 94 million for continued business for the year and expect that to generate around 9.5 million operating profit. If you take tax and interest of around 3.3million from the operating profit your left with 6 million pounds profit after tax.

Thats 13.6p eps against the brokers estimate of 12.7p for the year, the major concern to me is the potential loss on discontinued business that could knock 2 million + from these figures bringing the actual eps down to around 9p

Must admit it looks a good growth share with excellent margins and roce, which is what I look for, if there were no discontinued business to wind up I would buy at £1.40 now, but at the momment around £1.10 would be my entry point.

Sentiment is strong and I hope it hits £2.00 for you, good luck....wbj

Barclays have been increasing their holding recently tiggering a notification of interest. They now hold 1,816,566 (6.68%), up from 1,575,207 (5.79%).

From what I have seen in the past, Barclays are pretty shrewd investors, so in my opinion, this is positive news for Marchpole.

Also, at the current price, with a market cap of £31.3m, the company looks very cheap and could attract a bid.

The two main issues holding the share price back are the termination of the YSL license and the court proceedings with Boateng. However, the purchase of Moda America, Homebody and extension of licences should go along way to repacing these. And, with another large turnover already being looked for, there are real opportunities for dramatic growth in the future. MPH now have interests in the UK/Europe, the US, Japan and Middle East. With regard to the Boateng dispute, MPH appear to have had astute advice and won the previous claims. It looks like Boateng are clutching at straws, but in any case, I cannot see this having a dramatic effect on MPH and further guidance should come out in the next few months.

With an historical PE of 8.84 and forward PEs of 5.42 and 7.32, the prospects for this stock look very promising....the coming months announcements will be interesting reading that could eventually take this stock to new highs....watch this space..
