Meggitt wins Airbus A320neo fire protection system
Meggitt, the international aerospace, defence and electronics group, has enhanced its position as a major fire protection systems supplier to Airbus, winning the fire detection, control and APU and engine extinguishing systems for the A320neo programme.
The award follows the integration of Meggitt's established fire detection and control capability with the fire suppression equipment of recently-acquired Pacific Scientific Aerospace business, HTL.
Dennis Hutton, President of Meggitt Safety Systems, explained:
"The ability for suppliers to offer complete ATA Chapter 26 fire protection systems has become increasingly important as aircraft manufacturers continue to simplify procurement and logistics. In some cases, bids will only be accepted from suppliers who have the complete capability under one roof.
"The APU/engine fire extinguishing system on the existing A320 family is shared between two suppliers. Backed by longstanding relationships with this customer and our excellent reputation for on-time delivery and quality, this integration has enabled us to compete for and win a sole source position on this exciting programme."

Editor's notes
1. Over 1200 A320neos have been ordered by 24 customers worldwide. The A320neo has over 95 per cent airframe commonality with the current A320 family of aircraft, making it an easy fit into existing fleets, while offering up to 500 nautical miles (950 kilometres) more range or two tonnes more payload at a given range.
2. The A320neo is a new engine option for the A320 family entering into service from 2015. Its latest generation engines and large "Sharklet" wing tip devices will deliver a 15 per cent increase in fuel savings. This reduction in fuel burn is equivalent to 1.4m litres of fuel - the average consumption of 1,000 mid-size cars - over a year's time. 3,600 metric tonnes of C02 per aircraft per year will be saved, the amount absorbed by 240,000 mature trees. The A320neo NOx emissions will be 50 per cent below *CAEP/6 requirements and the engine will be significantly less noisy.
3. ATA chapter numbers provide a common referencing standard for all commercial aircraft documentation. This commonality permits greater ease of learning and understanding for pilots and engineers alike. The standard numbering system is controlled and published by the Air Transport Association. ATA Chapter 26 encompasses fire protection.
*CAEP is The International Civil Aviation Organization's Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection.
