Bank of Scotland has sold its 50% interest in four residential housing developments sites in London to Galliford Try for just £4 after a massive write-down to "their current market values". Publicly-quoted Galliford already owned the other 50% stake in the ventures.

The write-downs highlight the drop in housing values in Britain and are likely to have implications for several Irish developers who have land in Britain, as well as for the publicly-quoted Irish property companies, McInerney and Abbey.

HOUSE-BUILDER McInerney's bid to reach a deal with its banks over guarantees that it has broken is taking longer than the company originally predicted.

McInerney has been in breach of covenants – terms – of its loan agreements with two syndicates of banks since late November, and has been in talks with these institutions since mid-way through last year.

McInerney writes down land bank by E156m

Housebuilder McInerney has written down the value of its land bank by another 156m euro, on top of an earlier 110m euro writedown it took last year.

It has described its new move as "prudent", saying it does not foresee any immediate improvement in the property market.

THE PRICES of houses at Druids Glen golf club estate in Co Wicklow have been cut from between 11 per cent and nearly 50 per cent in an effort to sell them.

The prices of homes on golf course developments around the country are falling: a month ago, a group of investors in Doonbeg, Co Clare, cut prices, as did owners of some properties at the K Club in Co Kildare. The discounts on some of the exclusive golf properties were up to 50 per cent. Internationally, golf club homes are struggling to find buyers.

McInerney Homes launched the development of townhouses and four and five-bedroom homes at Druids Glen in 2006 at prices starting from over €800,000 for townhouses. The 400-acre estate between Newtownmountkennedy and Kilcoole, Co Wicklow, has a five-star Marriott Hotel and spa and leisure centre as well as of course the former Irish Open championship golf course

S and P: Irish house prices to fall 40pc

House prices in Ireland will have fallen by a massive 40pc by the end of next year, according to ratings agency, Standard and Poor's.

Hopes of a rebound in Ireland's depressed housing market took another knock today with Standard and Poor's saying that falling employment will outweigh rising affordability here for at least another 18 months.

House prices in Ireland will fall by 13pc in 2009, and a further 10pc in 2010, it said.
