Looking good on the read across from OCDO this morning.

------------------------------
Online grocer Ocado saw its sales rocket more than 50% in the third quarter of the year as more people shopped online in lockdown.

Sales at Ocado Retail, its joint venture with Marks & Spencer, and previously Waitrose, were £587.3m in the 13 weeks to 30 August.

Online grocer and technology firm Ocado recorded a sharp rise in third quarter revenue driven by continued higher average spends as it forecast annual core earnings of £40m. The company, which has started its new partnership with Marks & Spencer, said revenue in the 13 weeks to August 30 grew 52% to £587.3m with average weekly orders up 9.6% to 345,000.

Next has acquired a majority stake in the UK and Irish arm of L Brands's Victoria's Secret unit for an undisclosed sum as part of a joint-venture agreement. The unit went into administration in June after being forced to shut its 25 stores due to the pandemic. Its owner was unable to clinch a sale to Sycamore Partners earlier in 2020. Next would own 51% of the new JV, which in turn would acquire most of Victoria's Secret's UK assets and operate its stores in the country and in Ireland. L Brands would own the remaining 49%.

Ocado has said that in the two weeks since it launched its joint venture with Marks & Spencer, more customers are buying M&S products than they bought Waitrose goods before the switch. Ocado's sales jumped by more than 50pc for the three months to the end of August as demand for online grocery shopping remained robust post-lockdown.Revenues climbed 52pc to £587.3m for the 13 weeks to Aug 30, compared to the same period last year, while the average number of orders Ocado received per week rose by almost 10pc to 345,000.It said: "The weighting of M&S products in the average Ocado basket is higher than Waitrose prior to the switchover, reflecting positive customer reaction to the addition of M&S to the range."Demand for the new range [is] driving both an increase in the number of products in customer baskets and strong forward demand."... Grant Williams 15 Sep 2020 7:50AMIt's impossible to know the true level of unemployment whilst there are still Government schemes in place such as furlough as well as business loans that have put off or masked unemployment. The way the ONS gathers data will not demonstrate the actual numbers for a couple of months at least. Many businesses have held on surviving on  retained profits and savings. Our business has enough cash to see us through to April, just. Our staff have had hours cut to reflect lower demand, so it is all being masked, we are surviving but losing money every week in doing so.

Infections a lot lower, however far higher the GOV target of 1,000 day but on North West tonight someone with symptoms couldn't get a test after traveling around and it seeks the testing system inadequate. So there could be many people carrying the virus and they simply don't know due to them not showing symptoms.

Cases are still rising in Bolton and some other parts of the North West which is the worse in the country for infections now.

The public has spoken and the message could not be clearer: Brits want the whole FMCG industry to go even further when it comes to sustainability and social responsibility practices. Whether it's cutting back on single-use plastic or slashing food waste, UK consumers are increasingly concerned about how their purchasing decisions impact the planet, and today's fickle shoppers are also far more selective about where they buy their goods. One big issue to emerge in recent years is provenance. Growing awareness over the carbon impact of food miles and the potential for poor sustainability practices in some global supply chains mean shoppers are increasingly concerned over the source of their food and the journey those ingredients have taken before arriving on their plate. The Covid-19 pandemic has done little to stem this provenance tide. In fact, the profound collective and individual anxiety caused by the global pandemic has arguably brought it even more prominently to the fore. As a result, the public is ready to buy British, claims the Capgemini Research Institute. According to the group's How sustainability is fundamentally changing consumer preference report, 63% of UK consumers now plan to purchase more locally made products in the next 12 months in light of Covid-19."Growing concerns about environmental challenges and the need for conservation of natural resources – as well as greater expectations around societal issues – have brought sustainability into the mainstream for consumers and organisations," the report states. Similar conclusions were found in many other countries, with the driving force behind this 'buy local' trend including: the perceived level of safety in local production; greater trust and traceability of local products over imported ones; the smaller carbon footprint of local products; and a sense of supporting local communities. ... London City Airport cutting 239 jobs as part of' 'crucial restructuring plans'

Airport bosses said the restructuring could affect 35% of roles - a total of 239 - across the organisation.

The airport suspended commercial flights at the height of the pandemic on 25 March and passenger numbers have remained well below 2019 levels since flights resumed on 21 June.

Chief executive Robert Sinclair said: "It is with huge regret that we are announcing this restructuring programme today and our thoughts are with all of our highly valued staff and their families.

"The aviation sector is in the throes of the biggest downturn it has ever experienced as a result of the pandemic. We have held off looking at job losses for as long as possible, but sadly we are not immune from the devastating impact of this virus.

"Our focus in the coming weeks is to help all staff through this exceptionally difficult period.

"We are committed to playing our part in rebuilding a stronger local and national economy once the worst of the downturn passes and believe that the difficult decisions we are taking now will enable the airport to bounce back in a better shape when growth returns."

Hundreds of thousands of job losses forecast this Autumn

As the furlough scheme runs out job losses will accelerate placing more pressure on income, this in turn will reduce consumer spend and hit retailers.

MARKS are to make 7,000 redundant before Christmas which will have a severe impact to come.
