Phil, I don't see where the upside would come from.

If there was traction on non food then a buy case remained intact,
the opposite appears to be happening, just IMV only.

Those price recommendations/targets are complete meaningless...whose purpose are they serving?...about time they ban broker recommendations completely...to some extent its a bit like PPI mis selling...

For those that might have missed the R4 'You and Yours' 40min M&S programme yesterday, you can listen to it here (it should start playing straight away):

:-S ... and this from a fella who has a 'buy' on MKS

Haitong analyst Tony Shiret said shrinking clothing space by 10% was “clearly not enough” and that M&S needed a good Christmas. “M&S as a minimum needs… to achieve the market consensus estimates as a base upon which to restructure and persuade the market that it is not becoming Debenhams,” Shiret said.

We shop at MKS.
I have not seen anything like that mess you refer to.
As a shareholder I am impressed with the standard and quality.
Maybe some stores are below standard, and hopefully they will be closed.

We all see what we want to see.

Capex is to be £400m this year.(above report)
Easy to see why Bolland was removed, all that cash wasted on loss making foreign adventures.

The CEO seems to have more discipline, he is on the right track.

Agree about online clothes shopping.
you need to see and feel the product.

Personally i think stores will make a comeback and the Amazon thing is a fad.
A compromise, click and collect for example, will be made.
Never will online top 25% of total (prediction)

Talk of online offering....if you are buying exactly the same product again of same size, fit etc etc then online is good...but surely there comes a point with new clothing purchases whereby one would want to touch, try it out etc etc so better to go in the shop. I read it very recently that a lot of the online purchases do have a habit of it being returned back...

careful...just maybe they should have never gone to 600p in the first place....& as it did that was the time to sell into...

Problem is M&S stores are grossly huge....so they just put stuff every where to fill up space!...in the process it has lost its identity...

I do not understand.
I agree it will be a Waterloo moment.(one of the most important British victories in history.)
Dunkirk was a success of sorts as well.
A brilliant strategic withdrawal.

Seems a positive comment to me.

MKS were 600p in may 2015.
now 334p.
a fall of 45% in 18months.
That is a crash by any standard.

I am confident that the CEO will turn this around.
It will be a long job, so we must have patience.
It is all in the price with lots to spare.

How tempting MKS must look to a predator at £5.3bn.

I think they've got this really wrong. Just know your customer and provide clothing for them. That is generally 40+ something modern but not flashy. I think reducing clothing and moving more to food is a mistake, too much competition in that area. I think reducing the estate is also a mistake and fear they will end up another BHS if they're not careful. The new MD looks lightweight and unconvincing, not up to Marks normal quality. Shame as Marks is such a strong brand.

"My 17 year old was in Marks (under protest)" ... sums it up

My 17 year old was in Marks (under protest) but came away saying that he liked a lot of the stuff in the store.
He is quite fashionable and loves the 60's type Mod stuff ... a lot of it suited his taste , Ben Sherman type shirts and the like .
First time that has happened ... bought a couple of sweater type things that he has worn and loves them ...very good value too , in his opinion.

Only problem was that he is a 30 waist and every trouser / jean started at 32 !

Marks even had a "Meet and Greet" type chap at the door .. I was impressed.
Lots of stock but they are gearing up for Black Friday apparently

The "older demographic" is the growing demographic and also the one with the most disposable income. Should be MKS's absolute core customer base. They just need someone to tap into the market successfully and that is where they seem to struggle. I saw an article in the press recently where someone who described herself as "thin and stylish" at 62 wanted something fashionable but baulked at being put into a pvc mini-skirt by Alexa Chung! My wife fits that category exactly. She wants clothes that are classic, stylish and good quality and is prepared to pay for it. She still looks in on M&S occasionally but rarely buys. Besides design, their quality has gone down (which I can confirm from personal experience of their (male!) underwear. Quality, design and the right (not necessarily cheapest) price. Simples.

Agree nothing wrong with "grey" pound

Problem is they don't restock the wardrobe as often as the younger age group. Fortunately the food cupboard needs restocking regularly or they starve
