SAINSBURYS profits came out at top end of forecasts but share price in the red

"Grocery sales rose three per cent while underlying profit before tax was £690m, down five per cent on the previous year, but at the top end of £630m to £690m guidance range; Sainsbury said it expected next year’s total to come in between £640m and £700m."

Bottom line profits far worse however after impairments.

Nearly 4 in 10 people expect their financial situation to worsen in the next 12 months according to a survey of UK consumers by UBS.

The Swiss bank said the 38% figure was a series high and contributed to the overall pullback in purchase intentions for low and high ticket categories.

The survey showed consumers across all income groups are cutting down on discretionary spend.

As a result, UBS sees a drop in low-ticket leisure and vacation spend intentions for low-mid income brackets (below £40,000).

Further, high ticket categories such as cars, kitchens and renovations have subsequently seen a drop in purchase intentions for the next year whilst the likelihood of starting a new savings plan in the £40,000-59,000 income bracket has increased.

In terms of what the survey means for individual stocks, UBS noted DIY spend expectations are trending down which is a negative for Kingfisher PLC (LSE:KGF) given that DIY accounts for c50% of UK revenue.

But is was more positive for Dunelm where UBS noted the firm has seen a revival in purchase intentions for the coming year with high income consumers continuing to prefer Dunelm to Argos.

As with DIY, spend on Homewares is likely to decline in the coming year. Similar to the last wave, affordability and convenience are likely causing consumers to purchase homewares from supermarkets such as Tesco, Asda and B&M, UBS suggested.

UBS reiterated a buy on Howden Group and a sell on Kingfisher while keeping neutral ratings on Dunelm and DFS.

One of the Mail analysts thinks fall in retail sales could be more cost of living squeeze hitting households. Bills came in in April but consumers could have tightened up in March worried about the bills comming in.

GOV starts to pay it's £300 cost of living support soon which could make a difference to sales from here. Not sure who gets it however as last year I thought everyone got circa £900 split into 3 amounts Spring/Summer Autumn and winter.

Monthly weather forecast is also not looking good for most of the country. This will be bad news for clothing retailers especially as the last year comparative was warm and sunny.
Only clothing retailer I am holding is MKS. I may top slice if positive monthly trend reverses.
Sold Boohoo ahead of results as I am worried by cash flow while they fund the US distribution centre
Someone from Richer Sounds was on the radio today saying they like wet weather and sales fall significantly during the first hot spell of the year.
Looking to buy into Angling Direct but concerned poor spring weather vs last year will be a further drag.

Retail sales fell due to a wet March but market not taken too much notice albeit MKS down a bit..

The outlook the next week not at all good which could put a dampner on early May sales which is quite crucila for retailers.
