TRADE:

bought: BDEV

Price: 331.5p

amount in shares: 359

Cost inc fees etc: £1,207.3p

Reason:

The price has recovered back over the 300p resistance and became support. The MACD has crossed back over with the RSI at +50 which indicates that a further move up is due.I just hope that the U.S get their act together as this and all trades will take a big sharp hit so a bit of a gamble to buy this now.

Trust you are all well. I like to read a number of investment books from authors such as Peter lynch, Simon Thompson and Luke Johnson. I have a lot of respect for Luke and have been intrigued by his £1m personal investment to buy c13% in Clear Leisure plc (ticker CLP). The mkt cap is only £6m. With the share price at 3.25 and a NAV of 13.3p.
2. The company owns land 'mediaoplis' that was valued in 2012 at €47m but carried in the books at €35m and villas acquired in Sardinia are valued at £5m but were recent acquired for €8.9m. This has all the hallmarks of a kitchen sinking IMO. The company has had plenty of interest in Mediaopolis but the offers received we're in shares (the company wants majority cash) and there was also an issue with the mortgage (that's now been resolved). The company wants to sell Mediaopolis ASAP (and some other investments for sale) and reinvest the cash for growth.
3. That growth is going to come from taking on more hotels through its Ora brand. Interestingly, Ora has recently signed deals with Thomas Cook and Alpitour securing substantial revenue and support from superior brands.
4. The company has €17m of previous tax losses it can use up before having to pay any tax -which is always nice...
5. All funds are going to be used to expand not only into hotels but into expanding the sosushi restaurant group via cobra ding in the Ora hotels, taking direct control of franchisee restaurants and expansion with new restaurants. As we know from Pizza Express and Luke's other ventures.

Thus, in my opinion, this is a turnaround, a growth story and an asset play all rolled into one. Luke is someone who I trust and am confident will succeed.

Keen for your feedback.

TRADE:

Bought: PFD

Price: 120p

Amount in shares: 959p

Total cost inc fees etc: £1,167.85p.

Reason:

Although it is up 100% since july and the technicals indicate a slight retrace as they are over bought I believe that the chart is looking long term bullish and any short term down side will be out weighed by the longer term up side.

TRADE

Bought: TW.

Price: 99.75p

Amount: 1,059 shares

cost: £1,074.09p inc fees etc

Reason:

chart wise TW. has turned bullish with the price back over the 50dma,the RSI trending up in the upper 50's and the MACD having just crossed over.

Fundamentally TW. have a trading statement this thursday and it should show that their housing take ups have increased amoungst other +ve news.

Trade:

Buy: Thorntons (THT) 1328 @ 83.05p = £1,121.36 inc expences. cash c/f £0.05

Trading statement in a couple weeks should be awesome, they simply can't stay at the present price for long.

Not sure the chart looks too good though :-)

Also particularly like CMS, FIF, IAE, SIA.

Cheers for now, Smart

Trade!

Sell: Dixons 2695 @ 42.09p = £1,121.32 + £0.09 cash b/f = £1,121.41 c/f

I'm sure DXNS has a lot further to run but that's enough for now. Need the cash for my next trade :-)

There's a few I'm tempted by at the moment. I'll probably buy tomorrow after the indices have come off a few bob.

Cheers Smart

TRD results due any day is where I would put my £1,000.

Is on the main market [not AIM] and is valued to go bust at £1M.

A full listing must be worth the best part of a million.!!!

Thing is, it has a turnover of £16M and debt last time round of just £70,000.

So if profits show up this stock could start you off in style.

Good luck in any event.

Taking a short term view on an index looks bloody difficult to me! So I try to stick to a longer timeframe i.e I doubt the world will end and do believe that economies will recover. I'd be very happy with a slow recovery, giving great scope for stock-picking.

I do like SDY on a long term basis, made loads on them years and years ago.
I'll log 1778 @ 55.25p SDY. Will also be interesting.

Anyway I realise this is nothing to do with the purpose of this thread so I won't clog it up with posts. time for a couple pints at my local to enjoy the last of the glorious sunshine.

cheers

sm:

I agree with CMS as being a long term investment although I am not in yet.

The reason why I set this challenge was to test my hit rate of break out formations.

The idea is to spot a share that I think is about to break out in a matter of days and get in on it until it peaks then sell and move onto something else.

To be fair its not going that well as I have found myself over thinking trades as it is important to get it right as there is no margin for the share to retreat and get stuck in for months on end. That is why I sold WIN as it pulled back to far,but I may have sold out to early on that one as it stabalised and looks to be in a bull flag which will probably break out next week with results.

with a £1000 pot I have also spent a lot of money in trading fees, but as the pot builds(hopefully) it will be less of the percentage of the trade.

Its just a bit of fun really!

I do take what is happening in the markets into consideration when buying shares and that is why I will put this on hold for a while until the market direction is a little more evident.

I mainly stick to ftse 350 shares and small caps so big market swings tend to effect them and its better to take a step back when you see a freefall like we have just seen/are seeing.

If I HAD to chose ONE share to buy and hold for the long term it would be SDY.

As an aside to the challenge I was wondering on Friday what I'd do if I actually HAD to put all my eggs in one basket and hold for 10 years. I've gone for Communisis (CMS). Seems a bit boring but they do Marketing, design and printing better than anyone for business. Major clients on long term contracts and looking to grow nicely over the coming years. £1,000 would get me 1845 shares at 53.25p.

I'll be interested to see how this compares with the challenge portfolio over such a time, I'll pop in every year to comment if you don't mind.

And I'll put Warren Buffett down for 283 shares in Tesco @ 346.75, now that will be interesting!

Mr BlueSky, do you have any long term investments such as above? Also can I ask, when you do your charting do you take into account a view on idices? And a short/medium/long term view of economic growth etc?

whatever the strategy it's difficult to buck the trend when we have a meaningful pullback such as we've just witnessed.

Good Luck, Smart

Update: 29/05/13

SOLD: CWC

Sold SDY today: 2,188 shares at 57.75p including costs
