There is NO fat divi, it has been suspended.

"
-- The board is not recommending payment of a final dividend. Interim dividend of 0.5p already paid (2016 - 2.5p)."

This company has been a three legged horse for too long.
Time the bits were broken up & sold off.
Fat divis aren't enough.

If the business is struggling there is no point paying a dividend, as an investor I would rather they had some cash for when they may need it, at the end of the day dividends are great however from a business point of view it is like pouring cash down the toilet.

ps. I don't hold any shares.

Sold some today. But gutted thought ALY were going to do well as making a fair chunk at 11p. All the shops seem to be busy and the gear they sell is very appealing. Why didn't they say today the dividend would be abolished? Hope they will keep that up. Poorly worded statement that's for sure

Yes that was my comment yield unsustainable the writing was on the wall when they did reduce the dividend but things were still deteriorating.

Too many retailers chasing too little cash.

It cld be about reducing his declarable asset base/earnings - and if the buildings/hotels/tea shops get hived off somewhere it cld be about preparing for asset stripping - whatever is going on its def not about your wellfare

Comment about avoiding ultra high yielders is spot on

I am wondering if Dr K K Peng paid off his wife's divorce bill in cash, or partly in shares???? The messy divorce gives lots of insight into the mindset of the guy at the helm. It does appear that there is a concerted effort to walk down the share price of ALY. Perhaps it is just total incompetence, and inability to develop the online side of the business? Nothing would surprise me from someone who spent £6m on lawyers fighting a divorce settlement.

But even if they make a small profit what does that say about the second half?

It suggests to me the second half may be a loss.

Not going the right way, that is why the share price is plummeting. Bricks and mortar stores are really struggling with online retail, as against rates rises on the High Street and minimum wage rising faster than inflation.

Bricks and mortar retailers profits getting wafer thin.

edit:
If things don't turn around and it has to start closing down bricks and mortar stores it could be end of the company.

Reading last years results:

53 weeks to Jun'15: PBT 23.5mln, EPS 2.51p

74 weeks to Jun'16: PBT 23.9mln and EPS 2.34p

so 74 weeks was less than 52 weeks, and the forecast of 1.2p (post #3873) of less than half this is goign to be significantly missed!

If you were walking the share price down - then a loss on revaluation is a free hit.
After all no immediate cash cost so business unaffected - but the loss shows up on the P&L

I have started wondering - would that 8 storey empty office building be suitable to make into a hotel?

May be very expensive at £34m - but if its value fell to say £6m .........

3753 " finding out stuff like they spent all the cash on an empty building gets me worried...."

I could not understand that - but surely its the only building with a value large enough to write off £2.8m

As I said in a later post - after finding out this was majority owned - there is only going to be one winner.

So I expect the share price will be walked down. either deliberately or as a by product of the various schemes and remunerations affecting the company.

Then when it is next to worthless - will the esteemed director make an offer for the rest?
