15/1/2015 09:14 | The LAD 2yr chart looks like ti has been taking out of a textbook. Would certainly be nice to see it start a new trend sometime soon... preferably an upward one as opposed to an accelerated downtrend! | speedsgh
15/1/2015 08:28 | Share price rising to reach the top of the downtrend channel. Can it finally break out, or will it be pushed down again? | rcturner2
14/1/2015 17:59 | Fully agree with your last point about the link to social issues - primarily high unemployment and breadline income for many who are in work. | nod
14/1/2015 10:11 | O/T Nod - Go back 15-20yrs + I would agree with you. However excessive alcohol consumption/gambling has now become an issue that is affecting more than just a small minority in my opinion. Not only is it ruining many individuals' lives, it is ruining families. We are only just beginning to see the long term social, health + financial consequences (think NHS) of such misuse. Not quite sure what the solution is (if indeed there is one) but making such vices so easily available is surely not helping matters? Maybe the increase in alcohol consumption/gambling is a symptom of some other deeper societal issues? Would be an interesting area to explore more deeply if I had the time. Aimho. | speedsgh

13/1/2015 17:54 | The vast majority behave responsibly but a few don't have enough self-control. The minority tend to get noticed more than the majority. The big question is does a government impose a wholesale ban on a product or a pastime because a minority take things to excess e.g. binge drinking / eating or compulsive gambling. When it is a danger to others a government can legislate e.g. drink driving. Otherwise it comes down to suppliers and consumers being responsible. | nod
12/1/2015 08:59 | People drink responsibly don't they? Gambling responsibly seems entirely rational to me. | rcturner2
12/1/2015 08:47 | The whole mess regarding gambling of any sort is being made much worse by the bleeding hearts of government and the gamblers anonymous goons. I ask you, how on earth is, "Gamble responsibly" a rational statement. | stephan1946
12/1/2015 08:32 | They already moved it up from 20% to 25%. | rcturner2
12/1/2015 08:31 | No won't ban, but tax will go to 30%.Bricks and mortar bookies, a relic of the past. FOBT the only thing keeping them alive, for now. | montyhedge
12/1/2015 08:06 | FOBT`s give hmrc 20% out of the cash box, can you really believe that any professional politician would ban that?? never. | stephan1946

09/1/2015 10:14 | They have an agreed takeout same as fruit machines. They have the same level of "randomness" as a fruit machine. Whether they are more dangerous than fruit machines through the speed and size of bet is another issue, but in terms of how they work they work exactly the same as fruit machines. | rcturner2
09/1/2015 10:11 | They are miles different. I do not see a fruit machine game advertised as random they are clearly marked as saying on a % in pubs of around 72% and in arcades as 90% + where as FOTB games are marked as random. | 21trader
09/1/2015 10:08 | They are no different from one arm bandits that have been around for years. Who advertises them as random? | rcturner2
09/1/2015 10:06 | RCT They should not be to allowed by law to advertise them as random because clearly they are not. From watching friends lose everything on them it is clear you can go on long losing spells on roulette but not long winning spells and the random number generator is not going to land on a number with a large bet on it. Hostility has been building for years about these machines and they will not be allowed to continue unless they keep hiking taxes. The next government could well be the end as well they cannot be allowed to continue. | 21trader

09/1/2015 10:01 | 21trader, the FOBT will provide a certain level of randomisation, same as the old one armed bandits. However, the software inside will always control the payout to ensure that the % takeout is as agreed with the authorities. Generally how they work is that as money goes in some is deducted as the "take" and the remainder is used as the payout. The software is controlled so that no win can be produced that exceeds the current payout available. It is not true randomisation unlike a casino roulette table for example. | rcturner2
09/1/2015 09:54 | Nod If something really is random then how are the bookies raking in billions of profits each year since FOTB's were introduced. Normal casino's sometimes announce losses when customers have a lucky spell. You remind me of Dirk Vennox totally up his own backside and refusing to admit the truth because he gets paid too much from the ABB. | 21trader
09/1/2015 09:51 | The chart on this one is just so ugly. Sorting out the online is good work in progress. The key are the high rollers (big percentage of profits) and the high street. In theory others will close first leaving Lads and Hills to fight it out like the good old days. The decline in racing is a killer though | trentendboy
08/1/2015 23:32 | 21trader - "How does that work out then ?"If you don't know then it would be a good place to start your learning. It's the basis of fixed odds and pools gaming. All games are independently checked to ensure they comply and randomly audited. You are not discussing the difference between an alcohol addict and an FOBT 'addict'. They are both addicts and both need help. Do you ban the products for all as they did in the USA in the 1920's or do you give the addicts the help they need and help them address their problems?Pub operators and gaming operators have similar responsibilities to monitor and limit excessive consumption. The new regulations for gaming will introduce new systems and processes for monitoring. | nod |
