BHP in for the long haul on Escondida strike as it eyes 30-day wait

BHP Billiton's decision this week to give up its legal right to replace striking workers at the Escondida copper mine in Chile is a move aimed at sacrificing some output to undermine the union's position, analysts said Wednesday.

The strike began on Feb 9, after workers voted overwhelmingly to reject a wage contract offer by BHP Billiton. That led BHP to say it would not be able to meet contractual commitments, driving the copper price up on supply concerns.

BHP made a surprise announcement on Tuesday, saying it would not seek to exercise its right to replace the 2,500 striking workers after 15 days - which would have been this Friday.

Instead, it said it would wait at least 30 days.

The company said this was to assure the safety of its workers but industry experts say it was a strategic move that puts the ball in the union's court.

Higher interest rates are not good for commode..Overnight, the Federal Open Market Committee released the minutes of its two-day meeting ended Feb. 1, where members believed it might be appropriate to lift U.S. interest-rates "fairly soon." Additionally, proposed tax cuts by the Trump administration and new spending could see rates increase further to keep a lid on inflation. But the minutes didn't offer a clear sign on when the Fed will next raise rates, disappointing some investors. Among key U.S. indexes, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq both slipped 0.1%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended up 0.2%.

I am not surprised by the dip today and have used it to top up.
I'm also quite glad to see Cu down today since there is a potential turn tomorrow. :-)

Citigroup says copper fever may raise the temperature for Australian miners

Copper prices may soar to $US8000 a tonne, or $US3.60 a pound, by the end of the decade according to Citi analysts, who have also upgraded their forecasts for a number of Australian miners highly exposed to the commodity.

The spot price of copper has risen strongly over the past year, particularly since October. It's up 30.3 per cent on February last year, last trading at $US6045.50 a tonne.

Mmmm, maybe in the price as not much action today. Still, guess we ll find out if Oleg has any rabbits to pull soon enough. Hope he says something like, '' refinaski agreeski, divski reinstatski.... '' - I know the former is unlikely tomorrow and the latter not a cat in hell's.

I would rather we didn’t have a strike: BHP Billiton CEO on Escondida

While BHP Billiton swung back into net profit in its latest earnings release and raised its interim dividend, the mining giant is still facing some uncertainties such as the outcome of the ongoing workers strike seen at its Escondida copper mine.

"I would rather we didn't have a strike," BHP Billiton CEO Andrew Mackenzie told CNBC Tuesday.

"We have discussions, negotiations with unions all over the world. Our next phase of productivity and safety requires a greater flexibility from the workforce, a greater sense of empowering them, and them taking control to make themselves more productive."
