Walking around the village yesterday evening, it seems everyone has switched from gas central heating to burning logs! Not good for the lungs or carbon footprint. We’ll be back to the pea-soupers of yesteryear during an anticyclone in the winter. The PM will announce how the UK has ended gas and heating oil use at some future COP summit…whilst choking on the fumes…

A SOUTHAMPTON mum is facing the prospect of a cold winter after being refused permission to use a fireplace to heat her home.

Mum-of-three Emma Gargaro, from Mansbridge, expects her energy bills to treble from next month.

When this happens, heating her home will become unaffordable, she says.

Her three-bedroom house in Howard Close has two boarded-up fireplaces which she is hoping to restore to keep warm.

However, housing association Abri has twice refused her request to reinstate the fireplaces due to net zero targets.

Her worries come amid reports of firewood sellers witnessing sale increases of up to 60 per cent as more and more people look to replace central heating to cut costs.

The 43-year-old carer said: "It's a scary time with so many people struggling with heating their homes so having the fireplaces reopened would make a world of difference.

"I use LED strips which use less electricity to light the hallways and rooms. A fireplace would help light and heat my house.

"I am happy to pay for it all to be done properly and get it certified too. I would even pay to keep getting it certified so I don't know why it's been refused."

Abri has denied Emma's fireplace requests due to the company's goal of achieving net zero by 2050.

Prime Minister Liz Truss is understood to be planning to borrow billions to limit the expected sharp rise in energy bills for households and firms.

It is understood that a typical energy bill could be capped at around £2,500 with full details expected on Thursday.

Currently, a typical household's gas and electricity bill is due to rise from £1,971 to £3,549 in October.

The government's plans to subsidise bills means that customers will not be expected to repay the support.

It is unclear how long the government support will last, but the overall government support package is expected to total around £100bn.

The ultimate figure will depend on gas and energy price movements in the highly volatile international energy markets as well as how much additional support is offered to the most vulnerable.

Ms Truss has pledged to "deliver on the energy crisis" - with details expected to be announced on Thursday.
