SCSW nap write up..in case you missed it.

'Cambridge-based Horizon Discovery (HZD; 216p) specialises in tools for researchers engaged in genomics and the development of personalised medicines. It is enjoying barnstorming growth in sales from £6.6m in FY13, a forecast of £11.1m in FY14, £20m in FY15 and £28.8m/first profits in FY16. Before personalised medicines came along, all patients with a specific type and stage of cancer received the same treatment. However, treatments that worked well on some didn’t work for others. HZD was set up in 2005 with backing from some of the founders of Abcam and its flagship product is X-MAN where it supplies paired cell lines, one with disease-causing genetic anomalies and one “normal” to enable scientists to direct medicines at the genetically determined features of a disease. High 65% gross margins. HZD’s ‘patient in a test tube’ has barely scratched the surface. '

Darrin Disley, the chief executive of Horizon Discovery (LON:HZD), says the strong share price performance could open the door to ‘further opportunities for acquisitions’. Disley discusses the company’s cash burn and being a ‘safe haven’ for investors’ money.

SCSW 2015 Nap and I suspect it will be a main write up in Feb issue as not previously written about prior to Nap tip. Looking good for next couple of years if not taken out by a bigger fish.

I also found the disclosure of the future R&D payments amazing (ly good). With royalties in addition. Not sure how to value this company, but definitely one to tuck away for a few years.

Cambridge biotech sitting on near $500m gold mine

Horizon-Disley-2014

The relentless rise of Cambridge personalised medicines pioneer Horizon Discovery was re-emphasised today when the company revealed it was sitting on an R & D milestones and product royalties goldmine in a trading update to the UK market.

The gene editing technology trailblazer says it is eligible to receive future R & D milestones of up to $239.5 million plus potential product royalties which, if they only match last year’s figures, could add another $182m to the war chest, giving the business a $421.5m cash umbrella for a rainy day – not that any showers appear to be on this particular Horizon!

On top of that, Horizon says it has grown 2014 revenues by more than 77 per cent year-on-year and will beat consensus expectations of £11m revenues by around seven per cent.

Cambridge, UK, 25 September 2014: Horizon Discovery Group plc (LSE: HZD) (Horizon), a leading provider of research tools to support translational genomics and the development of personalized medicines, today announces that its business unit Horizon Diagnostics has signed a Master Services Agreement with a major global diagnostic development company and a US biopharmaceutical company to support the development of companion diagnostics for novel, genetically-targeted cancer medicines.

The first project covered by the agreement requires the generation of genetically defined cell lines and related gDNA and FFPE standards by Horizon Diagnostics for a total consideration of approximately $1.2 million. A large proportion of the revenue from the deal will be recognized by Horizon in the second half of 2014.

The commercial terms of the deal are currently non-exclusive, however they include an option of exclusivity on terms to be negotiated in the future.

Dr Darrin M Disley, Chief Executive Officer of Horizon Discovery Group plc, commented: "This is a highly significant deal for our reagent products business and demonstrates the potential of this business to contribute substantial growth to the Group in 2014 and beyond. We look forward to working closely with our new partners."

Dr. Paul Morrill, Senior Vice President, Reagent Products, added: "Horizon Diagnostics is a leader in the provision of genetically defined, human genomic reference standards, allowing molecular diagnostic companies to exercise the highest level of quality control and accuracy of their molecular assays. We are excited to have been chosen for this project which demonstrates further our leadership of this field."

You may have something there Mirabeau as I can't see any other reason for the continuing climb, but who knows? Waiting for an announcement.

Interesting movement here. HZD do have the possibility of milestone payments from AZ should AZ decide to trial some of HZD's compounds (I think that's what they call them!)..these potential milestone payments can add up to over $200m so these sums are pretty hefty..

AZ desire to ward off the seduction from potential bidders has it seems force them to raise their game regarding the trailing of new drugs for cancer etc..HZD are right in there with AZ
