Their intense advertising campaign, coupled with marketing promotions regularly on TV, and the press must have made an impact. You could hardly forget "Go Argos"! Time will tell.

Jonny33 - You have certainly put your finger on the weak link with Homebase- It does not (imo) have a viable market positioning - It seems (to me) to be a twee semi DI shop for the middle class - It does not offer the semi-professional range of B&Q nor anywhere like to depth of product available through Screwfix - The yard goods selection is a laugh and the garden range is outclassed by most garden centres. (all imo but suggested by trying to buy there and the item/s being looked for were not available) .

Not sure how it could be revamped to be meaningful.

Cheers Jonny.,

If you are correct - the key information will be the strategy for Argos - The market could see past this year IF it can see a clear and realistic strategy to see Argos grow.

Let me take a guess at what will happen in January....

Argos interim trading statement (14th Jan) will be the second profit warning, and will tell a story of a bad Christmas trading period.

Homebase will be sold!!

I suspect both bits of news will come out at the same time.

If this happens what will the share price do? I think it'll go up because of the news of the sale, the bad sales could make it go the other way....if only I could see into the future....

Anyway Happy Christmas fellow investors and a profitable New Year.

When,in January, are they going to release their trading statement?

Yes, imperial3, which is why Argos are now going all out for digital. Even so, it doesn't look good. No wonder they are closing stores.

My local Argos was almost totally deserted this morning. A week out from Christmas, it should be rammed. I was tempted with the share price down at this level, but prudence says 'wait'.

Online metrics are actually quite good according to the likes of Alexa, with Argos the 18th most popular site over the last three months in the Uk and notably ahead of last year!

This man has an agenda, and that is, he wants to see a falling price for the company,so he can make money this way.At what point he has to close his position I do not know.We will have to wait until their trading statement is released, to know how the company is doing one way, or the other until next year.I do hope Home will surprise the city surpassing analysts' expectations, and give this shorter a Christmas present,he does not want.In the meantime will a predator pounce? This should keep him on edge.

The large short taken out by this guy was made earlier in the month, the bid rumours on Homebase over the last few weeks must have unnerved him so now publishing a negative story to push the price down. Lets not forget this company will and does make profit and it should still be around £100m so it's not a basket case just yet.

I do think the Christmas trading period will be below expectations but not a write off.

Sad the price is so low and unjustified when you look at many unprofitable over hyped poorly managed companies out there.

Word on the street is that there are a few 'new suits' in Homebase poking around the accounts department so I think there is some validity to the speculation about Homebase being evaluated for sale. Lets see what the new year brings.

just made quick counting and if I vallueate this stock based on its asset it is now 16m cheaper than it should be.

taking in account all assets(except goodwill and Other intangible assets) minus all liabilities the company is worth £804.6M ... currently trading on £788.18M market cap.

getting goodwill for free sounds good to me

Had a teensy little punt down at these levels. Not any special confidence in the stock, just hoping it has been oversold a touch and that things might not be QUITE as bad as they seem.....
