15/12/2006 12:09 | reason why margins are thinning is because the permanent business is booming. can you see an end to it yet? | fruit slice
15/12/2006 10:40 | The slowdown in UK public spending growth is already claiming victims. Hays, the specialist recruitment group, warned shareholders yesterday that its margins were thinning, primarily because of less lucrative public sector work in the UK. Overall, the group still expects to meet profit expectations for the year to June. But the public sector setback and slower fee growth in the UK and Asia Pacific were disappointing for some analysts. Recruitment is notoriously vulnerable to the downs in the economic cycle, even for Hays, which has made strides to diversify its business by country and by occupation. After yesterday's 1½p slide in the shares to 159¼p, they trade on 16.4 times current year earnings. That looks a bit pricey, not least because Gordon Brown's economy drive has much further to go. 04/7/2006 10:44 | 0809 GMT [Dow Jones] Goldman Sachs lowers Hays (HAS.LN) '06 target price to 150p from 161p and cuts pretax profit to GBP189M from GBP198M and to GBP206M from GBP219M in '07. Follows "bland" trading statement which showed UK growth had slowed to 5%. But maintains neutral rating given the share price fall which "seems an overreaction." | prokartace
