"If you are short the stock on the ex-dividend date, you PAY the dividend to the lender and it is deducted from your account on the Pay Date."

I suspect there will be a lot of retail punters rushing in with their 'small' buys today to qualify for the dividend payment so looks like a great shorting opportunity on Friday afternoon as the Monday (post record date) sell off begins 👌
