ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Both leading parties in the Kurdistan Region met on Tuesday to discuss the formation of the new regional government and ways to improve bilateral ties to work together in Baghdad.

During the meeting, both sides agreed to reorganize and develop bilateral ties in line with the current political and economic situation as well as enhance diplomatic relations for strong support to the new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet, the politburos of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) said in a joint statement.

The two parties decided to work together to resolve issues between the KRG and the Federal Government of Iraq at all levels and disputed sectors, underlining the need for a strong and active Kurdish voice in Baghdad, the statement read.

They also agreed to form a committee to reorganize relations between the two parties in general and create a joint stance to deal with the situation in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and neighboring states.

Over the past few months, ties between the two Kurdish parties have been tense, namely after their disagreements on a single Kurdish candidate for the presidency of Iraq.

The statement mentioned that both parties expressed their support toward a special committee for the formation of the new government to bring stability and the rule of law to the entire Region, including a partnership with all the parties that would participate in the new KRG cabinet.

The KDP won 45 seats in the Sept. 30 regional parliamentary election with the PUK securing almost half of it, 21, out of the total 111-seat Kurdistan Region Parliament.

The leading party recently nominated Masrour Barzani, the Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC), as the new prime minister of the Kurdistan Region. He will be tasked with forming the new government cabinet.

Additionally, the KDP elected Nechirvan Barzani, the incumbent Prime Minister, to become president of the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region once the post is reactivated, having been suspended since November 2017.

The party is also scheduled to hold a high-level meeting with Gorran (Change) Movement on Wednesday in Erbil to discuss the formation of the new government and the current situation in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

HEWLÊR-Erbil, Iraq’s Kurdistan region,— US Secretary of Energy Rick Perry met with the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Massoud Barzani on Tuesday in Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan region.

Perry visited Erbil on Tuesday afternoon after a stop in Baghdad earlier in the day during a tour of the Middle East. Perry was received by Barzani at Erbil International Airport.

At the end of the meeting, they said that they had talked about ways to improve ties between Iraq’s Kurdistan Region and the US.

ERBIL - Chancellor of Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC), Masrour Barzani, received on Tuesday the US Secretary of Energy Rick Perry where they held a "productive meeting" to discuss practical measures to further improve the economic collaborations between the sides.

The pair, according to a readout by Barzani's office, stressed on the practical means that would benefit the people of Kurdistan Region and Iraq as a whole in accordance with the Strategic Framework Agreement between the United States and Iraq.

During the meeting, where the US Ambassador to Iraq Douglas Silliman was present as well, the Kurdish top security official called for a "renewed effort" to provide the future Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) with technical and policy support in hopes of diversifying the economy, implement reforms, and perform proper governance, the statement added.

The officials further hailed the recent agreement between the regional and federal governments to resume Kirkuk oil exports as part of an effort by both sides to further strengthen their ties.

They also shed light on the relations between Erbil and Washington and steps the US may take to help Erbil and Baghdad resolve the remaining issues between the sides based on the Iraqi constitution.

ERBIL - The federal government has agreed to increase the Kurdistan Region's share of the 2019 budget bill from 12.67 to 14 percent, a source revealed on Tuesday.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Baghdad Today that a committee has been formed to review Erbil's budget share for fiscal year 2019.

He pointed out that Iraq is seeking the Kurdish factions' support for the underway process of conclusion of establishment of a new cabinet in Baghdad.

However, the Kurdistan Region wants to return the 17 percent budget share, especially after the regional and federal governments agreed on resuming the Kirkuk oil exports while the Kirkuk-Ceyhan oil pipeline is partially controlled by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
