12/10/2021 09:47 | ERBIL — Kurdish prominent leader and President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Masoud Barzani, has called for unity among the Kurdish representatives in Baghdad after his party won a remarkable victory in the parliamentary elections. Barzani's statement came one day after Iraq held its parliamentary elections with different political entities and candidates participating in the competition from all provinces in the country and Kurdistan Region, during which the KDP secured over 30 seats in the parliament. Barzani hoped that the Kurdish parties will unite as one and "work together for a common goal in the higher interest of Kurdistan, defending the rights and achievements of the people of Kurdistan, and building relations between the Kurdistan Region and Iraq on the basis of true partnership." The former president of the Kurdistan Region further argued that the success of the elections "is a success" for democracy in Iraq and the will of the people in the country. Barzani further indicated that the success of his party in the Iraqi elections "means the success of the principles and values on which the struggle of the people of Kurdistan is based," stressing that the party's victory "is a message to all parties that the people of Kurdistan will not abandon their history and values." He also thanked Iraqi PM Mustafa al-Kadhimi and the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) for holding the general elections successfully. President Barzani concluded his statement by saying, "Once again, I thank the people of Kurdistan, and I especially mention the steadfast and loyal brothers and sisters in Kirkuk, the heart of Kurdistan." The KDP has won 32 seats in the Iraqi parliamentary elections which was held on Sunday. The Kurdish major party secured 11 seats in Erbil, nine seats in Nineveh, eight seats in Duhok, two in Sulaimaniya, and two in Kirkuk provinces. | nestoframpers | |

Brent crude, the global benchmark price, peaked at $84.59, up 2.3 per cent and its highest since October 2018, before slipping back to $84.01 last night. SPONSORED Oil markets were already tight as demand rebounds from the pandemic and as the Opec+ alliance of big producers withholds millions of barrels of oil per day from the market. A global shortage of gas and soaring gas prices have further boosted the rally in oil, amid signs that some energy users are switching to burning oil as it is now cheaper than gas.
