GDF Suez SA (GSZ.FR) - 1H earnings - August 10th, before market open

MARKET EXPECTATIONS: The consolidation of International Power's (IPR.LN) as well as Spain's utility AgBar, along with higher oil and gas prices should help boost the group's earnings in the first half from a year earlier, despite adverse weather conditions which dented demand in the group's markets.

MAIN FOCUS: Analysts expect GDF Suez to lower its FY guidance but to retain its medium-term forecast after a warmer winter than expected and the anticipated absence of a gas tariff increase in the second half. Analysts also await further comment on the impact of Fukushima on the energy sector, the impact of the drier weather and updates on gas contract renegotiations with Russia's Gazprom.

Business ExchangeBuzz up!DiggPrint Email ...GDF Suez (GSZ)'s liquefied natural gas terminal near Boston is scheduled to receive a cargo July 30, according to vessel tracking data compiled by Bloomberg.

Maran Gas Coronis, the tanker carrying the shipment, can move as much as 145,700 cubic meters of LNG, or about 3.14 billion cubic feet of gas, equivalent to 4.8 percent of estimated daily U.S. gas production.

GDF Suez operates the Everett terminal, which can send about 1 billion cubic feet of gas a day into the regional pipeline network, according to the company. GDF's Neptune offshore LNG terminal, which consists of a buoy system, is also near Boston.

LNG is gas that's cooled to a liquid for transport by ship to markets not connected by pipelines. The fuel is received at import terminals and converted back to a gas.

PARIS -(Dow Jones)- French energy company GDF-Suez (GDF.FR) said Friday it is teaming up with construction and concession company Vinci SA (DG.FR) and nuclear technology group Areva SA (AREVA.FR) to bid in a multibillion-euro French government tender for an offshore wind farm project.

The project involves the installation of 3,000 megawatts of installed wind turbine capacity by 2015.

The exclusive partnership is bidding for three of the five suitable areas identified by the French government, GDF-Suez said in a statement. The three, which could represent as much as 1,750 MW of offshore wind power capacity, are Dieppe-Le Treport, Courseulles-sur-Mer and Fecamp, all located in northern France.

The generation output from these wind farms would supply electricity to several million inhabitants for nearly 30 years, GDF-Suez said.

SANTIAGO (Dow Jones)--French power company GDF Suez (GSZ.FR) plans to build a 570 kilometer transmission line to connect Chile's central SIC power grid to the northern SING grid, the company said Tuesday.

Connecting the SIC, which provides energy to over 90% of Chile's population and runs from the northern city of Taltal to the southern island of Chiloe, to the SING would increase energy security and likely reduce costs.

The SING covers the far northern reaches of the Andean nation and supplies energy to the vast majority of the country's copper mining industry, which supplies a third of the world's copper supply.

GDF Suez submitted an environmental impact study to build the $500 million transmission line and is in talks with rival power company AES Gener SA (GENER.SN, AESZF) to help develop the project.

GDF Suez holds a 52.8% controlling stake in E-CL, the largest generator in terms of installed capacity on the SING energy grid, and a 63% controlling stake in the liquefied natural gas regasification GNL Mejillones terminal.

PARIS-After completing two major transactions in less than four years, French utility giant GDF Suez SA aims to divest itself of some €10 billion, or about $14 billion, in assets by 2013 as it focuses on organic growth and steers clear of more big mergers for the foreseeable future, Chief Executive Gérard Mestrallet said Thursday.

"For now, we focus on organic growth," Mr. Mestrallet said in an interview. "We might consider small and medium acquisitions in the future, but they will be specifically targeted."

Mr. Mestrallet took pains amid a global re-evaluation of nuclear power to distinguish his company from its more nuclear-tilted French peers and to present GDF Suez as a diversified global energy player that is well positioned to soar on energy-demand growth in emerging economies.

GDF Suez's planned divestitures over the next three years are needed to "neutralize" the impact on its balance sheet of its latest deal with International Power PLC, Mr. Mestrallet said. Under the $2.25 billion transaction finalized in February, GDF Suez merged its international assets with those of the U.K. company. That came on the heels of the 2008 state-orchestrated union between two longtime French utility giants, Suez and Gaz de France. The company's ancestor dug and managed the Suez Canal in Egypt.

So far this year, the group, the world's biggest power utility in terms of revenue, sold a quarter of GRTgaz, its natural-gas-distribution unit in France, for €1.1 billion, as well as part of its local distribution network in Belgium and its distribution network in Italy for €772 million.

Mr. Mestrallet offered few details on what additional asset sales are in the works. But he wouldn't rule out divesting some of the group's exploration and production activities. "I don't say no, there could also be partnerships," he said.

While French rival Electricité de France SA is heavily reliant on nuclear energy, the sector accounts for only 10% of GDF Suez's power output. That leaves the company less exposed to the expected drop of nuclear in the global energy mix after the crisis at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. The French government owns about 35% of GDF Suez, which stands in contrast to majority stakes in EDF and Areva SA, another large nuclear player.

Mr. Mestrallet said the group's current nuclear strategy is to stay the course on the energy source, although the nuclear share of GDF Suez's capacity will drop to 7% from 10% in the next three years as the company's project cycle evolves. "We have decided not to change our nuclear strategy for now," he said.

GDF Suez had been targeting Italy as a venue for new nuclear capacity, but that is "finished," Mr. Mestrallet acknowledged, following a referendum this month banning the fuel. He said he still holds out hope for the U.K., which has largely reaffirmed its nuclear ambitions after Fukushima.

"Nuclear prospects post-Fukushima aren't the same," Mr. Mestrallet said. "There will be less nuclear in the world. It will be replaced by something else."

EDF Will Sell 15% of Nuclear Output to Rivals After Market Opening in July
By Tara Patel - Jun 28, 2011 12:00 AM GMT+0200 .
inShare.0
More
Business ExchangeBuzz up!DiggPrint Email ...Electricite de France SA, Europe's biggest power producer, will sell about 15 percent of its nuclear output to rivals after a law aimed at opening up the French market starts on July 1.

The legislation requires EDF to sell power from its 58 nuclear reactors to rivals including GDF Suez SA at a price set by the government of 40 euros ($57) a megawatt-hour until the end of the year. The company will sell 61.3 terrawatt-hours in the next sixth months to other power suppliers, France's energy regulator said on its website. The price will rise to 42 euros a megawatt-hour next year.

"This improves our supply but it's not enough," said Patrick Massoni, head of investor relations at Poweo (ALPWO) SA, which competes with EDF.

The overhaul follows probes by European Union regulators into EDF's dominance in the French power market almost four years after the Paris-based utility lost its monopoly. The European Commission is examining the law to ensure it complies with competition regulations.

"We are expecting some further explanation from the French government," Amelia Torres, a spokeswoman for EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia, said by e-mail. Commission and French government officials have held talks over price, she said.

Nuclear Safety
French Industry Minister Eric Besson has said the law will adhere to EU guidelines. The government maintains that the new law will keep prices on average 40 percent lower than elsewhere in Europe and allow EDF to invest in maintenance and nuclear reactor safety.

"They may take months to study its effects on the French market," said Jean-Paul Tran Thiet, a Paris-based competition lawyer at White & Case, referring to the Commission.

GDF Suez (GSZ), EDF's biggest rival on the French market, has said that the prices for the wholesale power won't allow "efficient" competition.

Purchasers of 61.3 terawatt hours of EDF's nuclear output from July may include Direct Energie and Poweo as well as EON AG, Iberdrola, Total SA and Vattenfall, according to information published on the Web site of the French regulator.

These companies are included in a list of 32 published by the regulator as having signed a framework agreement with EDF for wholesale power purchases. A list of which companies are buying the power and how much won't be published.

'Pretty Good'
The sale this year of about two thirds of the maximum 100 terawatt hours of EDF's nuclear output is "a pretty good start," Tran Thiet said.

EDF's 58 French nuclear reactors generated 407.9 terawatt hours last year, compared with total French electricity demand of 443 terawatt hours, according to the regulator. At the end of March, so-called alternative suppliers of electricity had captured a market share of just 5 percent from the more than 30 million households in France and about 16 percent by volume of business customers.

The French regulator ruled last month EDF will charge rivals more for nuclear power next year than generation costs justify because of spending on safety measures needed after the meltdown at Japanese reactors following the March earthquake and tsunami.

The government-set price takes into account spending on safety that the regulator "can't evaluate," the Commission de Regulation de l'Energie said.

The government sets the wholesale price and the regulator publishes a non-binding opinion under the new rules. The regulator said it "approved" the price of 40 euros a megawatt- hour set for July 1, even though its calculations indicate a price of 36 euros to 39 euros a megawatt-hour would be justified based on production costs.

Mainstream in Talks to Build French Wind Farms, Kinsella Says
By Sally Bakewell - Jun 22, 2011 9:12 PM GMT+0200 .
inShare.0
More
Business ExchangeBuzz up!DiggPrint Email ...Mainstream Renewable Power Ltd., a clean energy developer partly owned by Barclays Capital, is talking with other companies about building wind farms in France, said Andy Kinsella, who heads the company's offshore business division.

The European nation, which doesn't have any sea-based wind energy projects, is seeking bids for 3,000 megawatts of offshore wind farms as it strives to meet goals on cutting emissions and fostering renewable energy set by the European Union. The French government wants to produce 6,000 megawatts of wind energy by 2020.

Mainstream plans to bid for a project with at least 500 megawatts of capacity, Kinsella said in a phone interview today. "Our participation will depend on whether we can cooperate with what we believe will be a winning group of partners," he said, declining to identify the companies they are in discussions with.

There are five sites available under the first phase of France's program, Kinsella said. Tenders for the first 3,000 megawatts will be published "within weeks," French Prime Minister Francois Fillon said on May 31.

French energy producer GDF Suez (GSZ) SA, Areva SA, the world's largest builder of nuclear power plants, and Vinci SA (DG), Europe's biggest builder, have already agreed to bid together for a site. Paris-based EDF Energies Nouvelles SA (EEN) and Alstom SA (ALO), the world's third-largest power-equipment maker, signed an agreement on Jan. 19 to develop sea-based wind projects in preparation for the initiative.

U.S. Expansion

Mainstream plans to expand on the 7,600 megawatts of offshore wind energy projects it has under development in Europe by building wind farms in the U.S., Kinsella said. The company will learn at the end of August whether its qualified to bid in a New Jersey offshore wind program, he said.

The U.S. projects range from 350 megawatts to 3,000 megawatts, according to the New Jersey environmental protection department. Mainstream will aim to start construction on a wind farm in the state in 2016, Kinsella said.

EXTRACT FROM investir
