GDF Suez delays decision on Cygnus fabrication
French operator pushes back date on choice of preferred bidders for contract by up to six months

France's GDF Suez has delayed making a decision on the preferred bidders for fabrication contracts on its multi-platform Cygnus gas project in the UK North Sea to as late as mid-2012.

IAIN ESAU London 24 December 2011 01:04 GMT

Sources said a decision had been due by the end of this year, but this has now been pushed back by up to six months.

One project watcher said GDF and partners Centrica Resources and Bayerngas want more time to evaluate yards in the light of concerns about fabrication capacity in tightening market conditions.

"They've looked at the project, looked at the market place and are putting a lot of thought into the fabrication (process)", said the source. Upstream understands GDF is not in a rush to award contracts in a market that is hotting up and has yet to establish its budget.

It is even thought that first gas could be delayed one year from late 2014 to ensure costs remain under control.

If long lead items, such as steel, are not ordered soon, added one observer, then first gas may have to be delayed.

This potential delay means GDF is more or less reverting to its original schedule of placing contracts in 2012 instead of toying with an accelerated schedule.

However, the awards could still come before mid-2012 because GDF may "want to book yard capacity early," said a source.

A final investment decision on the project is due to take place in the second quarter of next year.

GDF, headed by chief executive Gerard Mestrallet, was initially thought to have put two packages on the market - covering decks and topsides - of a four-platform development.

However, sources said there are more than two package, adding that contract awards will also be phased in "over four to five years".

It is understood that UK yards competing for the work include BiFab, Heerema, OGN, SLP, Global Energy Group and Tees Alliance Group.

Cygnus will be developed by a hub complex of three-bridge linked platforms and an outlying not-normally manned installation.

The hub will consist of a process and utilities platform with a 3300-tonne deck, a living quarters facility with a 2500-tonne topside and a wellhead platform.

A compression module will be added at a later date.

•• UK fabrication yard SLP Engineering has landed a contract to build a 140-man living quarters module for Nexen's Golden Eagle project in the UK North Sea.

PRESS RELEASE

December 20th, 2011

GDF SUEZ and CIC have closed the first deal of their partnership
GDF SUEZ and CIC have closed the acquisition by CIC of a 30% minority stake in GDF SUEZ Exploration & Production International SA and of a 10% stake in the train 1 of the Atlantic LNG liquefaction plant in Trinidad and Tobago. EDF Won't Bid For Le Treport Wind Farm Project- Report
Share this article PrintAlert
EDF (EU:EDF)
Intraday Stock Chart
Today : Monday 12 December 2011
French state-controlled utility Electricite de France SA (EDF.FR) has decided not to bid for the development of a wind farm in Le Treport in northern France, reports French business daily Les Echos Monday.

"We have taken this decision in order to focus on the four other [wind farm] areas," David Cordhia, the chief executive of EDF Energies Nouvelles, is quoted as saying by Les Echos.

There were fears within the group that the project would meet significant resistance in the region, especially among fisherman, says the report.

EDF's early withdrawal from the race also shows a certain "realism," as French energy company GDF Suez SA (GSZ.FR) is already a few steps ahead because it has been working in the region since 2005, says Les Echos.

The French government announced in July the launch of a EUR10 billion tender offer to build five offshore wind farms in a bid to boost the country's renewable energy industry.

The wind farms, which will comprise some 1,200 wind turbines off the north and west coast of France--in Le Treport, Fecamp, Courseulles-sur-mer, Saint-Brieuc and Saint-Nazaire--should generate 3.5% of the country's electricity output, the French ecology and industry ministries said.

The long-awaited tender is part of a wider government push to make renewable energy account for 23% of total energy production by 2020. It also comes as France's government is under increasing pressure to reduce its dependence on nuclear power.

French GDF Suez sees 8% drop in gas output next year to 55 mil boe
London (Platts)--9Dec2011/815 am EST/1315 GMT

France's GDF Suez said Friday it expects its gas production to drop around 8% next year, from 60 million barrels of oil equivalent in 2011 to 55 million boe (8.8 billion cubic meters) in 2012 and 2013.

Expected production of 60 million boe this year would be 17% higher than 2010 levels, and GDF Suez now targets production of around 65 million boe by 2014-15, the group said at a strategy presentation.

The drop in output next year is mainly due to the sale of the group's 10.4% stake in the UK's Elgin and Franklin North Sea gas fields to Total, announced earlier this week, a GDF Suez spokeswoman said.

The Elgin Franklin fields has a plateau production capacity of 140,000 b/d of condensate and 13 million cu m/ day of gas.

At GDF Suez' half yearly results presentation in August, CFO Gerard Lamarche said the company expected "an additional 10 million boe before 2013" compared with 2011 figures, but this was an outlook before the sale of the Elgin Franklin stake, the company spokeswoman said.

Production is forecast to be boosted in 2014 by the commissioning of the Gudrun Field in the North Sea, which has an estimated plateau production of 10 million boe/year. The 14.2 million boe/yr Cygnus gas field in the North Sea and 14.8 million boe/year Touat field in Algeria are expected to be commissioned in 2015, GDF Suez said.

The group also confirmed Friday it was concentrating on expanding in fast-growing emerging markets.

It aims to double external LNG sales to emerging markets by 2020, from 34 TWh in 2010 to around 68 TWh by the end of the decade.

In October, the group said January-September 2011 LNG sales rose 34% on the year to 31 TWh, with the number of cargoes delivered to Asia almost doubling, from 9 to 16.

In August, the group signed cooperation agreements with China Investment Corporation and China National Offshore Oil Corporation, through which CIC agreed to invest Eur2.3 billion ($3.1 billion) in GDF Suez' Exploration and Production division to take a 10% stake.

The French company also wants to strengthen integration and optimize positions in mature markets and preserve a 'balanced business profile,' it said Friday.

GDF Suez reiterated its aim to increase installed power capacity from 113 GW to 150 GW by 2016, with 90 GW of this outside Europe. It wants to increase renewable power capacity by 50% from 2009 levels by 2050.

The development plan also includes a 40% increase in revenues from energy efficiency by 2016-17.
