06/3/2020 15:08 | What exactly are the downsides for GSK from COVID-19 ? Will governments cut their drug budgets suddenly ? Will there be any reduced demand for GSK drugs from patients ? Will consumers be spending less on consumer health products ? None of these seem particularly likely to me . While there might be some short term problems with supply chains , medicines will surely be prioritised by governments all over the world . It's hard to see how GSK has suffered a 14% fall in the value of its future earnings stream . Add this to a rapidly falling risk free rate and stable earnings from big pharma should be valued even more highly . A US 10 year treasury at 0.9% makes a 7% earnings yield that is likely to rise over time from GSK look very attractive | nchanning
06/3/2020 09:21 | Interesting article... The Coronavirus Hunter Is Racing for Answers in a Locked Lab Over the last five years, Baric, working closely with Vanderbilt University infectious-disease specialist Mark Denison, tested almost 200,000 drugs against SARS, MERS and other bat coronavirus strains. Among the most promising was Gilead’s remdesivir, a drug that fared poorly when used against a recent Ebola outbreak in Africa. In the lab, it worked against numerous coronavirus strains, including SARS and other bat coronaviruses that are similar to the new strain. Every coronavirus it was tested on, “it had high potency and efficacy,” Denison says. That work was fortuitous. In early January, Baric got an urgent call from an infectious-disease colleague to send his unpublished data on remdesivir to colleagues in China who were dealing with a then-mysterious outbreak. Baric says he “was shocked” Since then, work at his lab has been virtually nonstop. Each scientist puts in from one to six hours inside two different clean rooms equipped to handle the virus. The lab’s workday begins at 6 a.m. and often goes until 11 p.m. Individual sessions are short for safety and practical reasons — researchers aren’t permitted to eat, drink or visit the bathroom once inside the lab. Everyone has to pass an FBI background check and undergo months of safety training. The Coronavirus Hunter Is Racing for Answers in a Locked-Down Lab A University of North Carolina scientist who has been chasing viruses for decades may hold the key to a cure "remdesivir" is an HIV drug isnt it? | crossing_the_rubicon
06/3/2020 01:08 | Anyway, not looking to raise blood pressures on here :) so this will be my last word. I accept the result. I genuinely worry for the consequences, especially for those who may be hit the hardest, but I hope things turn out better than expected. And, although it has been framed by economics a lot, it's true, there is a cultural element too and some of it makes me feel that in some ways we are building a big fence to block out our neighbour just because we don't understand all his ways or how he thinks. | rikky72

05/3/2020 21:38 | You're a better man than me "Sicker" :) The benefits have been outlined over the last 4 years but Remoaners wont have heard given they've stuck their fingers in their ears.. All they want to do is waste people's time by re-running the reffy campaign over and over again. | crossing_the_rubicon

05/3/2020 16:29 | I keep hearing about remoanersSo just one question: tell me one tangible benefit of Brexit? Not based on bs, meaningless phrases like 'taking back control' or more money for the NHS or emotive arguments resonating with those who still think we are going to return to the 'glory days' of the British Empire but, one tangible benefit? Still waiting for an answer almost four years on but, hey, maybe someone will surprise me? | rikky72

05/3/2020 13:15 | In other news, worrying dependence on China for Pharmaceuticals!! Wonder how long before a Remoaner will claim drug shortages are due to Brexit??? The made in China drugs today include most antibiotics, birth control pills, blood pressure medicines such as valsartan, blood thinners such as heparin, and various cancer drugs. It includes such common medicines as penicillin, ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), and aspirin. The list also includes medications to treat HIV, Alzheimer’s disease, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, cancer, depression, epilepsy, among others. A recent Department of Commerce study found that 97 percent of all antibiotics in the United States came from China. | crossing_the_rubicon
