03/5/2009 08:26 | WHO: says swine flu is not viral as expected. Mexico stabilising, cases dropping, and symptons outside Mex. weak. seems as though SKY and BBC have changed their view as to how this might not be so bad. GSK sub 10.00 on Tues. | anony mous
03/5/2009 07:32 | Sat, I think the FTSE / DOW has had a very big run up and are due for a move downward be that consolidation of the uptrend or a return to the bear market. The flu pandemic may be the thing that tips it downward. Anyway it looking at Glaxo's chart it seems to have an inverse relationship with the FTSE. I'm just guessing like we all are but the above along with the fundamentals (aka growth / dividend) & the fact the share is at the bottom of a range seems to me to make it a really good buy. I do feel many people cant see things that go against what is en vogue shall we say and I suppose I should be glad of that. I really do feel this is a raging buy. People would do well to go defensive sharpish I think. Private investors can react really quickly here. Some people who have bought banks etc recently are going to get done over again as there is no doubt the are toppy, coupled with iffy stress test's | oneeyedjack01

02/5/2009 18:14 | Perhaps superfluous making comparisons to 1918 but in 1918 there were 3 waves of flu, the first with relatively mild symptoms(which gave a degree of immunity to those affected), the second absolutely devastating and the third less severe, so the fact that current victims are relatively unscathed may not be good news yet! | spondon2

02/5/2009 09:48 | It is level 6 now Not sure it will do much to elivate the price tho...I got in at 992 just before the outbreak based purely on the 10 year+ resistance line of around 980...made good money 3x in doing so...sold half at 1062 and riding the rest on the flu outbreak...good luck to all holders :) | notaclue

European Drug Companies Prepare to Respond Article By ANITA GREIL ZURICH -- European drug companies are preparing to work on new medicines and ramp up production of existing ones to help combat the outbreak of a new deadly flu strain. Switzerland's Roche Holding AG, the maker of an existing flu treatment, Tamiflu, said it could quickly ramp up production of the antiviral drug if necessary to combat the swine-flu virus that emerged in Mexico last week. Novartis AG said it has been contacted by the World Health Organization about the development of a vaccine that would protect against the sometimes deadly flu strain. The Basel, Switzerland-based drug maker has received preliminary information about the swine-flu virus, but will need a sample to start developing a vaccine, said company spokesman Eric Althoff. Novartis expects to get the virus strain soon, enabling it to start work on a vaccine. It typically takes three to six months to produce a new vaccine, but it is too early to tell how long it will take to get one for swine flu, Mr. Althoff said. In Paris, Sanofi-Aventis SA "stands ready" to support public-health efforts, a spokesman said Monday. So far, Sanofi hasn't been asked to start developing a human vaccine against swine flu, he said. The two drug companies benefiting most at the moment from pandemic-flu worries are Roche and U.K.-based GlaxoSmithKline PLC. Roche's Tamiflu and Glaxo's Relenza appear to be effective in the current swine-flu strain, the WHO said over the weekend. Sales of these drugs skyrocketed in late 2005, when health officials world-wide worried that a strain of bird flu that had emerged in Asia could result in a global epidemic. Since the start of the outbreak, Glaxo has supplied 100,000 packs of Relenza and 170,000 additional doses of its seasonal influenza vaccine to the Mexican authorities at their request, the British drug maker said. The company said it is continuing to discuss with the Mexican authorities whether further support is needed. Glaxo said it is assessing how to increase production of Relenza. Roche has the key ingredients in place to quickly ramp up production of Tamiflu, spokeswoman Martina Rupp said. Roche hasn't yet received any new big orders for its drug, she said. Such orders will probably hinge on how the WHO classifies the new flu outbreak, she said. A WHO spokesman said Monday that the organization is considering raising a global pandemic alert, a move that would signal that a new virus is causing large outbreaks and that governments should prepare for widespread transmission. | madoff with cash
