Not just GSK but all UK companies will face a huge rise in energy and labor costs next year. Isn't it going to make it very difficult to achieve the year on year increases that the analysts measure success by? Just a thought. Is this how you define a recession?

flat finish into weekend. in limbo at the moment waiting for direction. Looks to me like further downside unless the cavalry decide to turn up. Writing is on the wall for further drops is my view and that wouldn't be such a bad thing for me so i can top up and build my position as a long term investment with healthy divi

@Anhar. I just hope to buy robust companies and hope they’re still standing at the end, even if the share price is down. If they are, there should then be a time to make money with less competition.

anhar: I think you're wrong. Shares fall GOING INTO a recession but shares RISE inside the recession as they are already thinking of the recovery.
Shares react FASTER than events.

Thus in COVID-19 shares fell steeply GOING IN then recovered in the depths of covid.
We're in the GOING IN phase here. But end of SEPT/OCT we'll be in recession, and I suspect we will see some hefty rises as pundits will be talking about the recovery - and gawd knows what will happen once Ukraine and Russia call it quits.

If a proper recession hits, meaning unemployment, businesses going bust etc. there is no doubt in my mind that shares will fall and fall seriously. How do I know? Seen it all before, more than once.

And no, this time it's not different, it never is.

However for the moment we are not into the full monty - yet.

anhar - true in REAL terms, but with 18% inflation and a falling pound, UK shares will probably rise but not by 18%.
But one thing is certain, if you hold cash, you will lose 18%.

I think booze is good in a recession - I've held Diageo for many years and through a number of recessions. I guess you could say that it is a drug company in a way. :~)

Fact is though that in a recession just about all shares will fall but some more than others.

My strat is to hold a widely diversified income portfolio and just do almost nothing forever.

In a recession drug companies are king.
Oh and candle companies.

Are there any quoted candle companies?

People are not poor, middle class wages are pretty high. The problem is 18% inflation.
Holding cash means you get 18% poorer.

You need to do something with the money - either buy goods that go up in value or shares that
go up invalue.
There is no real alternative.

In a recession cash is king - I'm only 30% invested right now and if this falls much further am going to top up significantly - it's been a consistent dividend payer for many years and will continue to do soThe world population is getting bigger and more pharmaceuticals will be needed for years to come - that's just basic sense
