Just saw headline about economy going back in the last quarter so this is an easy target plus jitters about Europe. I don't think that is going to necessarily deter people from buying products from this company to improve their homes.

Brexit and weak pound increasing cost prices I'd say. I'm thinking of buying here as value is really good. Just waiting for this to bottom out.

sp still looking strong, reflecting so much
refurbishment needed on 60/70's house builds

the housing market still looks strong
thxs to Londoners creating ripple effect, for the foreseeable future
even when rates go up demand will always outstrip supply,
every wk I use plumbase there evermore tradesmen/public
buying materials, expecting some good results next time round

their main competition Ultimate P&H staggering growth over last 3yrs
but they should be pushing better quality units, and not flogging out of date
products at their trade counters, joe public want quality,

Bristan set up their first commercial factory, just 1200 sq ft (£500month) now in hundred thousands sq ft look at their growth
don't listen to the bean counters, BUY the freeholds to put in
pension fund, rent is dead money
B&Q just seemed to have missed on kitchen /bathroom bonanza
over last 3yrs, they should copy Wren, joe public luv the sale signs
dyor
edit fall unjustified, can´t rope this in with general builders merchants,
refurbs, extensions will increase regardless of any house sales
falling off

18/3/16 Times "PROFIT IN BUILDING ON FIRM GROUND"

6/7 plumbase still doing good business, best plumbers booked up till 2017
the upgrades/refurbs/replacement boilers, etc etc

GFTU should expand buying good location distressed freehold up to 2/3000sq ft commercial units with or without tenants

7/3/17 tenants either side of our local Grafton Unit are struggling (meat warehouse/tile showroom)
excessive rates/rent are crippling business, unless you own freehold

mark...grafton technically didnt pay a dividend..they had one of those tax efficient share re-purchase schemes......it was the same as a dividend but was more tax efficient for the shareholder :-)

i dont see why they cannot return to a high return on equity long term..none whatsoever.

they have sailed this storm brilliantly...its a very very well run company.

I'm pretty much new to this company having not closely looked at it in much detail before, seems like a very interesting case.

I'm quite interested in what happened here (partly out of curiosity from a valuation point of view, but also partly out of any lessons to be learnt!).

The company showed phenomenal earning power before the housing collapse. According to my records they completely ceased paying a dividend from 2002 onwards? Can anyone please shed any light on that - considering the company was seemingly doing very well between 2002-2007?

The company was able to earn very attractive returns on its €1Bn equity base in 2007 if my numbers are accurate, around 17%. If there is a recovery in the construction industry, what kind of returns can investors expect to make on the firm's assets? Can we expect to see some capital returned to shareholders if the rates are unattractive - or are there reasonable grounds to believe the company can return to the earning power of pre-crisis years?

The company achieved an exceptional growth record from 1993 to 2008, they were clearly doing something right - is that business model now broken, or are we seeing this lull while excess construction inventories are being eaten up?

Thanks to all contributors, this is a really quiet thread, but on the plus side was quick to read through! Very interesting case.
