'The Price if Coal- - excellent, late seventies, Ken Loach film, particularly if you are a left-leaning ex-tory, like myself ...oh yes and I think IDS is a complete tw*t.
Back to coal and its price on the international commodity markets - $103 / tonne.
A 1000MW coal plant consumes 9000 tonnes of thermal coal per day. I will repeat that 9000 tonnes /day - $939,000 per day.
Never mind repaying the loan to build it, that figure is unsustainable. One plant is going to consume over 300 million dollars of coal annually.
Barapukaria produces about 250MW and the coal from the mine (providing it is not stolen) is adequate to power the generators.
If you were a Chinese bank or state organisation, you might just think this is all a bit over-stretched Not only are the power stations behind schedule and over budget but the Banglas need a deep-sea port to import the coal into the country and then distribute it to the generators by rail....and that coal price is going through the roof.
Phulbari exists, the surveys, studies completed - decision time ??
I'm of two minds here - PowerChina could say we have had enough, we are pulling the plug on this project next month and walk away.
OR - we could see the final extension to the MOU and an indication approval is imminent.
