Some big sells today: might have been linked to the reports on Thursday that Nortel is scaling back it's WiMAX plans in favour of LTE:

Of course Nortel weren't going to be big in the UK anyway but the momentum does seem to be going LTE's way...

WiMAX on the way
Mark Richardson
10/ 6/2008

BUSINESSES in Manchester are set to benefit from improved remote internet access after Freedom4 and Mumtel teamed up to provide WiMAX services.

WiMAX offers high-speed internet coverage to rival traditional broadband and ADSL, and will enable voice applications from remote locations with a system that is expected to provide download speeds of up to 15 Mbps.

Apart from the increased download speeds, other benefits to the system include the simple plug-and-play technology and Mumtel's value-added services for business.

"We are delighted to be partnering with Freedom4 to provide a genuinely new and exciting package. As an internet service provider, being at the forefront of technology is imperative and offering WiMAX to the people of Manchester allows us to bring this innovative broadband access to a vibrant city," Dennis Kellerher, Managing Director of Mumtel Ltd.

Freedom4 have a licence to build a national WiMAX that will include addtional services, but initially the service will be limited Droylesden, Moss Side, Rusholme, Longford, Mode Wheel Road, and Cheetham Hill.

BBC interview with Graham Currier. Not hugely convincing but showed a quick flash of a USB dongle which has to be better than the wired airspan unit the journo was forced to use!

No worries - might even be positive. If the 2.5 GHz spectrum auction is delayed, the 3.6 GHz chunk might be seen to be more valuable, especially if they get the license alteration.
