A GOOD YEAR for the Forecasters:?: Is 2003 again too optimistic?

"Of the 67 equity market clairvoyants polled, only three expected the Dow to close below its 2002 closing price. Only three expected a lower S&P close. Only three expected a lower NASDAQ close. As an average, the group expected the Dow to be up 18.3% in 2003, the S&P up 19.2% and the NASDAQ up a respectable 27.5%. You know, the stuff of which baby boomer dreams are made. When asked to pick their favorite stock sector, only one picked basic materials and only one picked energy. Of course the bulk of the remaining pundits were snuggled safe and warm in health care, tech and financials.

Of the 62 participants who chose to throw darts at the economy, only 2 expected real GDP to fall below 2% (the average was 3.2%). Only two of these folks thought corporate earnings would actually decline in 2003, although according to the Commerce Department 3Q GDP and prior period revisions report a month or so back, that is exactly what has happened over the last three quarters in a row. The average guess for 2003 operating earnings increase was 9.7%. As you know, those who veer far from the consensus social norms of society are either criminals or labeled as crazy. Those on Wall Street who veer far from the consensus have a very good chance of ultimately being labeled unemployed."

dodddy - yes to property! Looking to cash in some up here over the coming months.

BTW - I'm always moaning I'm losing trading money, but I should point out my property income was over twice my trading losses and, of course, their value has gone up far more, i.e. little of my overall "wealth" has been in trading/investing accounts!! ;-)))

Haven't calculated everything, but would expect all in to have seen +/-20% improvement in 2002.

A good year for me. I've yet to sit down and pull together all the relevant numbers.. the pitiful interest gained on cash.. the losses on what few shareholdings I clung to too long.. the nice gains on spreadbetting UK stocks downwards. But that last category I know has made it a successful year overall for me.

How was it for you?

PAULETA seals Portugal win
by

Real Madrid star Luis Figo made a quick appearance as Portugal handed China a fairly simple 2-0 in a friendly from Macau.

Goals from Nuno Gomes and striker supreme Pauleta saw the Iberian hopefuls earn a positive result in the final run-up to the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan™.

A costly error from China 'keeper An Qi allowed Nuno Gomes to grab the opening goal in the 50th minute.

Despite threatening and looking dangerous in the first half, China had no answer for the talented Europeans as Pauleta delivered the knockout punch in the 61st minute.

Not-quite-fit Real Madrid star Luis Figo came on for a quick appearance in the match, and the day belonged to Portugal all the way – a good boost ahead of their impending Group D encounters with The United States, Poland and co-hosts Korea.

Someone sold 2002 shares in HOL (not me). Obviously the favourite quantity to be dealing today.

And is where Pommy meant to credit this observation? :O)

My birthday. So I shall be raising a glass at 20:02 this evening together with afriend who shares the same birthday.

There are six time/date palindromes (mostly less impressive than this one) this year at 8:02pm on Jan 10, Feb 20, Mar 30,Oct 1, Nov 11, Dec 21. There were six at 10:02am on the same 6 dates in 2001, and six at midnight-02 on the same dates in 2000. But before that there have been none since 1532 (2351 2112 1532) and there are no more after this year till 01:02,10.01.2010

But special ones like today (middle third matching outer thirds) only occur 3 times in history 1001 1001 1001, 1111 1111 1111, 2002 2002 2002.

And if entered in a typical calculator display, it reads the same upside down.

So who will manage to get a message posted here at exactly 20:02 tonight? (Won't be me).
