Passenger numbers up 5.6% but 89 routes not covering costs so long way to go.

Flybe are the most generous low cost airline for seat pitch at 30", others offer 29". Reducing just the 1" would gain an extra 2 rows at least for flybe according to "pprune" website. Sounds like that could pay the pilot's salary.

Stuck these in my Stockchallenge for this month.

Aside from the recovery potential what better bid target in the UK airline industry could their be that Flybe as it gets back into profit?

Easyjet have said thy want to make acquisitions, IAG (BA) have 15% of Flybe too.

I'm here for the recovery but it has to be the best bid target I hold too imo.

Cheers Del - the Gov will subsidise the route because the South West is going to lose out from HS2 and they need to buy the south west's support imo.

I wonder with this staff/pilot redundancy deal how many staff have taken pay cuts too?

No doubt that it's part of the company's turn round plans to encourage those with threatened routes to source alternative financing. Hope it works.

Thanks Sandoval; excellent find. Be nice to see the Cranfield Pilot profitability study for 2012 figures if it's out yet. Can't find it up to now.

Cr - you may be right. I do know that crew costs are largest element of operating costs behind oil costs. There is actually a Pilot efficiency Index(pei) and flybe are median at 5. Link below very informative on company plans.

All the airlines are in a race to the bottom as far as career pay etc is concerned for pilots. In recent years, it's been easy to hit legacy contracts hard and cost save, especially in the light of the low cost carriers. The airlines are all moving to work on absolute minimum pilot numbers, and back full with temporary contract workers etc. Awful for what used to be a proper career, better for the bottom line figures. The airlines will have to be careful though-Jet2 for example are struggling to get enough suitably qualified pilots to cover their expansion (I hold there BTW). With the expansion of the Middle East carriers offering quick(ish) commands on big aeroplanes on big money, and tax free, quite a lot of junior guys are leaving the business, not least because they will be offered a permanent contract with Emirates for example. The low cost carriers and those offering only temporary contracts need to be wary if guys and girls leaving for pastures new, and leaving them with a gap in numbers that they will find hard to full. That said, youngsters are more than willing to stump up £100000 to fund getting their licences these days, to then be offered a temporary contract. IMHO, the price of the pilot isn't that significant (unless it's a hugely well paid legacy British Airways etc pilot). It's more to do with the productivity of the pilots, and retention of them going forward. No airline should be operating solely with inexpensive, and INEXPERIENCED pilots. All it takes is one headline "cadet pilot puts lives at risk" for example, for it to send the share price plummeting! All just my rambling thoughts, and all imo :)

Interesting Sandoval - but I still don't know whether we are talking about what a pilot earns and what a pilot costs a co.

Even if a pilot is on £68K he gets other fees for stop-overs, probably pension contributions, NHS contributions etc.

So the amount the co saves by getting rid of a pilot is probably a lot higher than what a pilot might whinge is his pay p.a imo.

Volume larger on both recent recovery days as well, so price has been drifting on low volume but rising when the proper buying comes in.

Looking at £15m savings from the pilots alone if you worked on £80k. Add the rest of the staff and you're probably up to £30m savings that fall straight to the bottom line - rather like TCG's savings are doing.

All imo/dyor etc.

Pilots on about £100k a year I think. It costs £125k to learn to be a pilot and you have to pay that yourself - you'd want a decent wage to invest that.

There's perks, holidays, pension etc - must all add up.

Chart bottoming out here?
