Unfortunately, and this is why I am a brexiteer, politics always trumps economics, human nature, it shouldn't, but it does. Sunak had no choice politically regardless of the economic sense. The awful quality of politicians in the western world these days highlights this even more. Germans buying Russian energy another example, sensible economically, disastrous politically, Putins invasion another, stupid economically and politically driven, his living standard won't change, endless examples. Very depressing and to some extent driven by public attitudes and social media.

Well if oil fell then the case for taxation should go away too . What I find ignorant by Sunak is to expect our North Sea producers to have to invest in the area . Enquest as noted in The Telegraph is looking now at investing in Asia . Such an own goal by this ridiculous shower of a chancellor . How can you tame inflation by taxing firms that are finally doing well ? The problem was years of low oil prices and the lack of investments coupled with a lack of certainty as a result of the very quick and poorly planned energy transition. Taxation will only contribute to less investments in North Sea and probably contribute to a further supply reduction as a result . Also less jobs and less local production . Taxation is always detrimental . A Tory chancellor only in name.

The selling is relentless despite the price of oil. How bad would things be if the price of oil fell significantly?

There was comment from Enquest yesterday....

EnQuest is aware of the need for action to address the cost of living crisis, but is disappointed with the implementation mechanics of the new Energy Profits Levy," the company said in an emailed statement late on Thursday.

..........

I would think that Enquest would need to invest further anyhow and will somehow be able to offset a % of this disgusting additional rip off tax.

Well I thought BP rather relied on Russia for its oil. And anyway isn't it a tax on profits. That's on Company profits, so it doesn't matter a hoot where the oil comes from. It is all going to be taxed.

..Nonsense...Sunak's tax applies to (UK) North Sea oil & gas production..... check the basics before posting!
