BIM: Engie signs new acquisition and displays ambitions

Interviewed by Julie Nicolas. - MONITEUR.FR - Published on 07/02/18 at 08:00

Keywords: Software - Help Tools

Since the launch of its "BIM Factory" in September 2017, Engie Axima joined Decode BIM in November and signed on February 6th the acquisition of the SXD group. Two steps that are part of a more global strategy: combining the strengths of the group and those of external acquisitions to form a BIM offer. Raphaël Contamin, director of the BIM Factory, details the project for Le Moniteur.

Raphaël Contamin is director of the BIM Factory within the Engie group.

Photographer-author Siret: 537 438 673 00015 - Raphaël Contamin is director of the BIM Factory within the Engie group.
LeMoniteur.fr: How does the BIM Factory fit into the Engie Group's strategy?

Raphaël Contamin: The group has undergone a profound transformation: in the last two years, non-strategic activities such as electricity generation from coal, new nuclear projects, oil exploration and production have been halted in order to reinvesting in growth-enhancing businesses, of which BIM is one. Engie Axima, a subsidiary operating in design, construction and maintenance in buildings and industry, had been using BIM for several years for its traditional trades (HVAC, fire protection, refrigeration).

It is therefore logically that Axima has chosen to build a BIM offer for its customers by associating BIM Factory, within its dedicated entity, with its in-house expertise to that of pioneering BIM companies such as Decode BIM or SXD. The creation of this entity results from a simple observation: the BIM will become a standard and represents an important growth potential.

LeMoniteur.fr: What are your projects with BIM?

Raphaël Contamin: We believe that BIM has significant value potential for our customers. If we succeed in convincing them, a large market will open, and we aim for a turnover of 100 to 150 million euros in 4 to 5 years. In order to achieve our objective, we first focus on external growth, hence the integration of Decode BIM in November, and yesterday's acquisition of the SXD Group. With 35 employees and 3.4 million euros in turnover, the SXD group brings us a strong punch, and iconic BIM references such as the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris, the redevelopment of the Lausanne Station, the Tower Saint Gobain in La Défense, the Tour Sisters in Courbevoie (Hauts-de-Seine) or the construction of the Doha metro. Other acquisitions or partnerships will take place in order to offer our clients the most complete and structured range of offers and know-how on the market.

One of our strengths is our ability to support our customers in BIM from conception to the end of their life as part of global projects in public-private partnerships (PPP) or design-realization-operation-maintenance (CREM) . But we also know how to intervene for a specific assignment: for BIM promotion, or BIM management in the construction phase.

The Monitor: How is your offer structured?

Raphaël Contamin: Our ambition is to create a continuity between the different stages of the life of a building or an industrial structure, be it design, construction or operation of the building. We also want to closely connect the BIM to the reality of the field, as experienced by the teams of installers and maintainers on the worksites or in operation.

For this, we develop interactions and experience sharing between Axima's teams whose know-how in the field of work is well established and the companies we buy or with which we enter into partnership agreements.

Thus, Decode BIM is expert in the acquisition of point clouds of existing sets through 3D laser scanners. On the other hand, Decode BIM does not have the knowledge of maintenance issues, which is the job of Axima. The BIM Factory will combine the two expertise to set up a global digital model that will be useful for the operation of buildings. Another example: for the synthesis, we will call on the know-how of SXD. The idea, ultimately, is to propose BIM management missions which cover all the stages, from the design to the files of the executed works (DOE) for the exploitation.

The Monitor: The operation of buildings remains your main objective?

Raphaël Contamin: Indeed, the exploitation of the buildings is the domain where the BIM will undoubtedly present the maximum value added. Designing a DOE so that it is useful to the operator is not yet easy, but we are working on it with our colleagues from the other subsidiaries of the group, such as Cofely for the facilitator.

Engie 'powering' Bahrain's utility sector
MANAMA, 1 hours, 53 minutes ago

Engie, a French multinational utility company, is a dominant player in Bahrain's utility sector supplying 90 per cent of the potable water and 70 per cent of the power in the kingdom, said a top official.

Engie has a number of sites and plants in Bahrain, stated Laura Thomson, the Head of Asset Management UAE, Middle East, South and Central Asia, Turkey, on the sidelines of the Gulf Industry Fair (GIF).

Engie, which is making its debut at the Northern Gulf’s leading specialist business-to-business (B2B) event for industrial products and services, said the Gulf Industry Fair was “very well attended, strategic and important for Bahrain.”

With a regional head office in Dubai, UAE, Engie has been active in the Gulf region for more than 30 years generating 30 GW of power and around 5 million cu m of desalinated water.

It operates 22 power plants in the region including three in Bahrain, one in Kuwait, six in Oman, two in Qatar, four in Saudi Arabia and six in the UAE.

"It was very important to bring solar to Bahrain as it is obviously an important energy resource within the region," observed Thomson.

“We are sponsor for a number of power suppliers in the region including Al Dur, Al Ezzel and Al Hidd in Bahrain,” she stated.

"We basically power Bahrain and provide the water,” she added.-TradeArabia News Service

Shell faces struggle over €3bn Eneco deal

Shell’s step into Europe’s electricity sector has struck a stumbling block

Jillian Ambrose, Energy Editor

3 February 2018 • 8:00pm

Royal Dutch Shell has struck a stumbling block in its march into the European power sector over plans to pluck a Dutch utility from public ownership.

The Anglo-Dutch oil major is a front-runner in the €3bn (£2.64bn) race to snap up Eneco from the hands of 53 Dutch municipalities after the decision to privatise the green energy company.

The group already partners with Eneco on wind power projects in Europe, which could pave the way for its next step into the power market after buying UK energy supplier First Utility for a rumoured £200m.

But The Sunday Telegraph understands that Shell is facing internal divisions over the deal and mounting political opposition.

“The process has been stumbling on for a while but it’s like herding cats with all the stakeholders,” said one City source with knowledge of the deal.

Eneco’s shareholders have been forced to bring in a mediator to prevent the sale from descending into chaos as municipalities clash on whether to sell their stakes in the utility, and how to safeguard its green credentials.

Others rumoured to be in line for the sale include Finland’s Fortum, French energy giant Engie and private equity investor CVC. Shell declined to comment.

2 February 2018 | Herpreet Kaur Grewal

Transport for London (TfL) has awarded Engie a contract to install solar panels with associated battery storage and to implement energy conservation measures on TfL’s estate.

The contract, awarded under the RE:FIT framework, will be delivered alongside the Mayor of London’s Energy for Londoners programme and builds on an existing strategic partnership between the two organisations, in which some 300 Engie staff are already supplying technical services to TfL.

The continuing first phase of the programme, estimated at £5 million, will be delivered across 24 locations including depots, river piers, bus stations, train crew accommodation and the Acton Railway Engineering Workshop. The initiative forms part of the London Environment Strategy to be a zero-carbon city by 2050.

The first new panels will be installed from early 2019, potentially providing 1.1 MW of solar generated power for TfL, adding to the 245kW of power provided by existing solar panels on the TfL estate. Combined, they are expected to cut TfL’s CO2 emissions by about 480 tonnes a year.

In parallel, Engie will be engaged in a range of other energy-saving measures, such as upgrading heating and lighting systems.

Graeme Craig, director of commercial development at TfL, said: “Across TfL, we are committed to doing whatever we can to be as energy efficient as possible. Improving London’s air quality and reducing our impact on the environment are key elements of the Mayor’s Transport Strategy and expanding our solar capability across the business will ensure that we do this in a cost efficient and technologically advanced way.”

Bryan Garnier reaffirms his buy recommendation on Engie and adjusts its fair value from 16.5 to 16 euros, after Suez's earnings warning last week.

The financial intermediary points out that the energy group still holds a stake of around 33% in Suez, which accounts for around 5% of Engie's recurring net profit in its estimates.

Bryan Garnier lowered his EBITDA, EBIT and EPS guidance by 0.5%, 0.9% and 1.7% respectively over the 2017-2020 period and notes that Engie's 'sum of parts' valuation includes the value of Suez market, which plunged on the last few days.

Youngsters from St Cuthbert’s and Highpark primaries get ready for some healthy eating with Stevie and Emma from ENGIE

Schoolchildren in Glasgow got a massive boost this week after healthy eating was put firmly on the menu.

Maryhill Housing and contractor ENGIE came together to deliver the £2500 windfall to St Cuthbert’s Primary and Highpark Primary.

Both are thriving schools in Glasgow’s Ruchill and share the Benview Campus in the community.

Now as part of its commitment to helping communities, ENGIE’s regeneration business (formerly Keepmoat Regeneration) has donated the money along with a further £2500 to community organisation North United Communities.

The money totalling £5000 came about after ENGIE began working for Maryhill Housing – undertaking improvement work to the Association’s housing stock.

As part of the contract there was a requirement for ENGIE to deliver ‘community benefits’.

Both schools were chosen as worthy recipients and plans are already being drawn up to use the money to encourage healthy eating among families and convey the importance of nourishing meals to ensure good health.

Highpark headteacher Mrs O’Donovan and St Cuthbert’s headteacher Mrs Tracey are working on a plan to make this happen.

Mrs O’Donovan said: “This is a wonderful donation which will provide essential funding to allow us to promote healthy eating.”

Mrs Tracey added: “We are excited about what we will be able to do with this donation. We are immensely grateful because it will go a long way to helping our children.”

Ruth Adam, community regeneration manager at Maryhill Housing, said: “Both schools are worthy recipients of this money. The Association is deeply engaged in helping the communities we serve and working together with ENGIE we have been able to do something of real value to both schools.”

North United Communities undertakes a vast amount of community activities all designed to improve people’s lives in a wide area of north Glasgow. Jill Mackay of North United Communities said the organisation was “delightedR21; to receive the money.

Their £2500 donation will again be used to benefit the community – particularly in the area of ‘Job Clubs’ and helping people to pick up digital skills.

ENGIE’s divisional head of business development, Stevie Nugent, and colleague Emma McWilliams came to the schools to announce the donation.

Stevie said: “Our business model is centred on building and transforming communities and this goes far beyond the delivery of new, or improvement of existing, housing stock so we’re thrilled to be working with Maryhill Housing to make a real difference. We have always worked closely with local schools and this is a fantastic initiative, which will drive positive change for children in the community.”
