mellorscarthwaite: Thanks for all the info. Does help to explain the recent good share price rally. Now if only it can push on from here rather than slipping back again as it has done several times in the past! Maybe the prospective improved dividends may help?

The share price movement here makes little sense -I don't think much has changed if you are sat in the company. Looking at the share price its looks like there has dramatic RNs news causing big up and downs. Not a bit. Re oil I was more thinking of the negative given that their muds go into fracking but there will be some gains in other from better gross margins.

Bones: Take your point. But ELM also sells some of its products to the oil industry so any downturn in that sector's activity as a result of lower oil prices might negatively impact those sales.

I would say that with the dramatic fall in oil prices, ELM is a prime candidate to benefit given the ingredients of its products! It takes a while for the market to add 2+2 and get 4.

A good share price rally over the last few days. Anyone got any views on why? And any thoughts about likelihood this rally might be sustained? We've been to around this price a few times before and it has always dropped back.

It has just been and gone like 'ships in the night' and I think we are basically becalmed, as usual. Expected to dock on time and with a full cargo. Hopefully a good bonus will be paid to all the crew.

there are plenty of share price movements which don't make much sense -often happens in August. See this as quality core holding.

Yes and with the 'profit taking' today its on the slide. I have it as a long term core holding so I'm not overly concerned. They are well positioned so its a matter of sitting and waiting......

Ref Meijiman's 'Should really start with a '3' in my view'.

I agree (ELM is a long-term hold for me) but the share price has made numerous previous attempts to pass the 300p mark and to date has always bottled out and slipped back to roughly where it is now. Frustrating.

this is a well established company which has been around for a long time. They have had some issues in the past, but the business as is, now seems stable and able to generate consistent positive cash -they do not operate in protected markets but have some useful market positions. For one they have the only chromium facility left in the USA. They also own the only commercial hectorite mine which supplies a key ingredient of drilling muds for the oil and gas industry. They have further scope to move into new geographies. They seem to have some reasonable visibility on earnings looking ahead. Should really start with a '3' in my view.

Interesting.
I topped up first thing, based on the interims, and it has taken so long for the price to build up over the day.
When I bought, most of the trades were automatic.
I guess it's below the radar?

Excellent. Its a core long term holding for me. Ticks alot of boxes. I may do some more research but I guess the chromium ops throws off alot of cash. Their drilling muds using hectorite must be seeing good growth from fracking and drilling. A great under the radar story -may even be a benificiary of a weaker dollar. tick tick tick........

Also, pension deficit repayments peak this year. Bodes very well for div. increases 2015 onwards.

Elementis - the FTSE 250 global speciality chemicals company - posts pre-tax profits of $72.4m for the six months to the end of June, 7% up on last time. Sales were 3% higher at $400.0m and operating profits were up 5% at $76.8m on margins unchanged at 19%. Basic earnings per share rose 11% to 12.8c and the interim dividend of 2.70c is up 5% from a year ago. Group chief executive David Dutro said: "Elementis has delivered a performance in the first half of 2014 that demonstrates once again the resilience of our business model. The Group's strategy of creating its own growth opportunities combined with its strong and diverse market positions has helped to offset the first quarter weather issues that impacted our Coatings, Oilfield and Chromium chemical businesses in North America. "This performance was achieved despite global growth rates that varied by region and industry. Our strategy of extending the Group's geographic footprint and broadening our end markets contributed significantly to this first half performance. "We believe that few companies are as well positioned as Elementis to capture growth in a rapidly changing world and we are extremely proud of the high performance culture that we have built. "The group's global expertise, in combination with its robust business model and track record of generating strong profits and cash flow, gives confidence that the future is indeed promising and that Elementis will continue to make good progress in the medium term, with earnings per share for the current year in the range of market expectations." -
