Intended to sell down the rest of my holdings this morning and inadvertently pressed the wrong button. So effectively doubling it instead. Then just short of a round number added some more.

The excitement is clearly elsewhere in my folio atm, but looks like my unconscious is sending me a message.

A small holding, but mine own. Still.

Eden folk posting about Potatoes and Chips so time to revisit an old post;

The Guess here is that Eden have on going most likely Cedroz, but possibly Sipcam , related trials with Potatoes potentially related to PepsiCo/ Xinova synergy/colaboration. We have not been told anything about potatoes but Eden collect TweetLikes a plenty of Potato growers and their trade bodies. Lofty Powerscourt will have Potato related relationships and I'm not just talking about Nick Dibdens indulgences.

No Smoke and Mirrors here but possibly Smokey Bacon.

The Role of Terpenes as Protectors of the Potato Crop

1.4 Terpenes
Terpenoids constitute the largest and most widespread group of plant secondary
metabolites, and they display immense structural diversity. Terpenoids are formed from
linear arrangements of isoprene units, and are then rearranged and cyclised in order to form
the terpenoid carbon skeleton. Terpenoids are classified according to the number of
isoprene units from which they are constructed, and these classes include monoterpenes
(C10), sesquiterpenes (C15), diterpenes (C20), triterpenes (C30) and tetraterpenes (C40) to name
just a few (Stevens 1992). Terpene synthases, a large class of enzymes, are responsible for
the diversity observed in terpene carbon skeleton structures. The diversity in terpene
structure is also due to the fact that some terpene synthases produce multiple products
(Degenhardt, Köllner et al. 2009). Investigation into terpene synthases has been an active
area of plant metabolic engineering research in recent years due to the fact that the vast
diversity of terpenes may be exploited for biotechnological purposes (Singh and Sharma
2015). These compounds have an array of interesting properties, which may be exploited
for medicinal and agrochemical purposes, as well as for flavouring and in cosmetics. As the
field of synthetic biology develops, terpenes may be interesting and useful compounds to
investigate and exploit, due to their high level of diversity and the wide array of industries to
which they may be applied.

Terpenes have been identified in this study as being associated with potato crop losses in a
variety of different manners. The compound identified as a ‘hatching factor’ for Potato Cyst
Nematodes, which stimulates nematodes to hatch in the presence of the host plant, is a
triterpenoid produced by potatoes. Understanding of the ecological role and biosynthesis
of this triterpenoid will shed light on the reason for the production of this ‘hatching factor’
by the potato, and may also be critical in identifying solutions to the problem of Potato Cyst
Nematode infection.

5 Conclusions
This study has investigated two problems facing potato growers: Potato Cyst Nematode as a
pathogen of the potato crop, and the problem of sprouting inhibition whilst the potato crop is
in storage. Whilst the study has been relatively broad in scope, several key points have been
highlighted, which may be key to improving potato crop productivity, both with regards to
mitigating against pathogenic factors, and preventing losses in storage.

The role of terpenes, both as products of the potato, and as compounds used to protect the
potato, have been discussed throughout the study, and the conclusions drawn support the
statements made by Singh and Sharma (2015) suggesting that the vast array of terpenes may be
exploited for their biotechnological purposes. Furthermore, a deeper understanding of the
ecological role of terpenes produced by potato and other plants may result in highly specific
applications and uses for such metabolites.

I think Eden have a unique technology/IP blend that addresses Big Ag's toxicological , resistance, regulatory phase out and microplastic issues, so yes I can envisage a degree of cosiness which is enhanced by antitrust rules in a highly concentrated and incestuous market place.

Chrischas,
The 'evaluation' has already happened imo. The summer fantasy is that Eden would risk reputational damage by announcing something widely publicised with a very large player. Eden's other recent PR has also concentrated on Microplastics....eg Unmentionables reference to ..SustainE as a 'consolidator'. It would also be unprecedented.

One should also bear in mind that Eden's Patent YEAST CELL WALL PARTICLE ENCAPSULATION OF BIODEGRADABLE PRO-PAYLOADS was presented at TechConnect World 2019
under the banner..Materials for Personal/Home Care & Cosmetics chaired by Yuanqiao Rao of Dow Chemicals...

The Corteva 'evaluation' is not happening in isolation. One might even suggest it's happening in 'Parallel'

See post 7722 for more background.

It's interesting to consider how potentially the relationship with Dow can grow into a collaboration with multiple players such as UPL/Arysta LifeScience etal due to the way regulators agree to split the various potential monopolistic positions that mergers create.

The article below makes reference to one such arrangement;

CARY, N.C. and JOHNSTON, IOWA (7 November 2017) – Arysta LifeScience, a Platform Specialty Products Company (NYSE:PAH), recently announced that it has initiated a long-term global strategic collaboration with DuPont. Arysta LifeScience will supply to DuPont Crop Protection, a business unit of DowDuPont Agriculture Division, an innovative fungicide technology with an initial focus on corn and soybean seed applied products.

Concurrently, DuPont will acquire rights to register, develop and commercialize seed applied products through its seed brands, to third-party seed companies, and ag retailers globally, that include Arysta LifeScience technology. Both companies intend to extend the collaboration to the development of additional products for other crops.

DuPont intends to develop, register, brand, and market proprietary product combinations with this fungicide technology. These new products are expected to include a systemic fungicide that would control both soil- and seed-borne diseases-including Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, smuts, bunts and seed rots.

“Arysta LifeScience’s fungicide technology for seed treatment is the result of a long-term R&D effort in formulation, biology and application development,â€ said Paula Pinto, vice president, Global Portfolio Management, Arysta LifeScience. “We are excited to partner with DuPont in the development of new seed treatment solutions.â€5533;

“This long-term partnership supports our strategy of collaborations that incorporate best-in-class technologies into our portfolio for grower benefits,â€A533; said Mick Messman, director - Global Seed Applied Technologies, DuPont. “We believe fungicidal seed treatments have become an essential tool for managing disease in crops such as corn and soybeans, and we expect this deal to allow us to create and offer growers even more effective seed treatment solutions.â€5533;

Add in the industry players to this picture and one can wild guess that a Corteva deal where 2017 deals with Arysta / UPL and Sumitomo/ Nufarm potentially means Eden's Seed deal could involve at least 50% of the Key players.

MICROPLASTICS IN SEED TREATMENT
There is growing global concern on the topic of microplastics in seed treatment, with countless publications in both the scientific community and general press. Although seed treatment accounts for only a small fraction of microplastics in the environment, our industry will have to play its part in reducing the environmental impact of microplastics.

At Incotec we are prepared. We have made it our mission to supply customers with the most sustainable solutions, not because of changing legislation, but because we are committed to helping feed a growing population in the most sustainable way and with minimal environmental impact. That is why we have been working on microplastic-free coatings and the first of these new coatings will soon be available.

Incotec: Microplastic-Free Solutions Are Here to Stay
Microplastic-free film coatings will be launched in the second half of this year.

Moving forward, Incotec has prepared series of new products for sunflower, corn and vegetables seeds that are microplastic-free. These new and innovative products address all the most important aspects of conventional seed treatment, making sure that all the features of advanced seed treatment have not been lost. Microplastic-free film coatings will be launched in the second half of this year. Incotec will make sure that its full portfolio is microplastic-free and sustainable to the max, which is the direction of Mission Zero.

I know what you mean but commercially there are way bigger markets that I'd rather Eden concentrate on. In any case Eden are bound to be directed by their partners Corteva / Dow / Bayer /UPL/ BASF /Eastman / Sumitomo etal.
