JO Hambro - 9/4/24

Dowlais has noticeably failed to participate in the rally of global auto peers, driven principally by extended technical pressure post the Melrose demerger, higher interest costs and a non-cash impairment at Powder Metallurgy. This is despite good operational execution, a moderation of EV headwinds, margin expansion, a share buyback and multiple director share purchases. The pro forma balance sheet position, however, has warranted some attention given pension contributions, provisions and leases. Whilst no single issue is unsurmountable, the cumulative impact on an operationally geared business means we will tread forward with caution and with a disciplined absolute weight allocation.

It really isn't (re APH).

120p to 37p in 9 months and no sign of recovery says it all.

Good to see the Dowlais buy back started. At that rate they'll be buying every trading day for the next nine months....

I've done really well on other buy-backs lately, including ITV and LLOY so no reason to expect any different here.

Back into profit today.

I thought the fall was well overdone on a goodwill write down, and with a 2.8p dividend (ex-div a week tomorrow) Dowlais has a reasonable yield.

I think 150p might be a little optimistic, but a pound should be easily achievable in the relatively short term.

BBMC - yes but the sells reported could well indicate they have worked the whole order. Meaning the selling pressure has gone.

Latest on re-opening Baltimore Port fully.

BALTIMORE --
As the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Baltimore District continues working with local, state and federal partners to clear the wreckage along the Fort McHenry Channel following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, engineers have determined a tentative timeline for the restoration for safe navigation in and out of the Port of Baltimore.

After detailed studies and engineering assessments by local, state and federal organizations, in collaboration with industry partners, USACE expects to open a limited access channel 280 feet wide and 35 feet deep, to the Port of Baltimore within the next four weeks – by the end of April. This channel would support one-way traffic in and out of the Port of Baltimore for barge container service and some roll on/roll off vessels that move automobiles and farm equipment to and from the port.

USACE engineers are aiming to reopen the permanent, 700-foot-wide by 50-foot-deep federal navigation channel by the end of May, restoring port access to normal capacity.

“Thanks to the exhaustive work of the Unified Command during the last two weeks, including underwater surveys and detailed structural analysis of the wreckage, we’ve developed a better understanding of the immense and complex work that lies ahead,” said Lt. Gen. Scott A. Spellmon, USACE commanding general. “A fully opened federal channel remains our primary goal, and we will carry out this work with care and precision, with safety as our chief priority.”

“These are ambitious timelines that may still be impacted by significant adverse weather conditions or changes in the complexity of the wreckage,” Spellmon added. “We are working quickly and safely to clear the channel and restore full service at this port that is so vital to the nation. At the same time, we continue to keep faith with the families of the missing and are working with our partners to help locate and recover their loved ones.”

Well worth a read about logistic impacts of the Balti Bridge, short extract below and link to full article.

"In the meantime, multiple seaports up and down the East Coast have said that they stand ready to absorb the extra cargo volume from Baltimore. The additional cargo per port is not expected to rival the peak surge levels seen during the late-pandemic import boom. The Port of Virginia, which is just 125 nautical miles to the south of Baltimore, has been investing heavily in expansion and is expected to pick up a substantial share of the slack.

“I don’t think we’ll have a large impact in terms of logistics and shipping moving forward. There might be snafus over the next couple days while issues are being worked through, but I think they’ll be able to overcome that pretty quickly,” said Brent Howard, president of the Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce, speaking to The Hill.
