The one MLP I invested in was in a SIPP, and the high tax was indeed applied there.

Good luck with the tax returns if you invest in an MLP such as BSM:

Mattbuoy , do you know if this high tax rate is also the case if a MLP is held in a SIPP? I hold some CQP and have been trying, unsuccessfully, to get an answer from inv managers/SIPP admin.
Thanks
Sorry for off topic.

It won't be (can't be). I would guess it will be a 10 for 1 ADR, so as to have a price over $10. Or if they go for an actual listing then they will have to do a reverse split for the same reason.

Let's just hope that the company's desired U.S. listing isn't structured as an MLP.

BSM is a Royalty MLP (Master Limited Partnership). Unfortunately for us here in the UK the MLP structure means that the dividends (actually "distributions") attract very high rates tax e.g. 35%. This is even with a W8-BEN.

There may be other similar companies out there which are structured as corporations and therefore attract the standard 15% tax on their dividends.

On the YAV blog video BSM (Black Stone Minerals) was mentioned as a comparison to DEC. Decent growing divi at over 10% based on their latest divi payment. Just out of interest is anyone invested in BSM?
TIA

Shell boss believes gas shortages will last several winters (5-10 years)

Bullish marco backdrop for DEC - disaster for ordinary folk.

Increased gas competition is clearly not helpful for DEC, albeit I asked about this on their latest call and they seemed pretty relaxed about it.

I realise that this information is three weeks old , but the Financial Times reported the following about Chesapeake Energy : “ Shale patch pioneer Chesapeake Energy [ is ] to ditch oil in favour of natural gas in planning to offload prize oil assets and double down on American
natural gas … plans to exit oil altogether and return to its roots as a natural gas producer , instead pinning its future on a wave of demand for US exports of the commodity … focus solely on gas production from Louisiana’s Haynesville basin and the Marcellus in Appalachia “ . Chesapeake Energy has a far higher market cap , at US $ 12.62 billion against DEC’s £ 1.19 billion , and Chesapeake’s shares have risen 96.48% in the last year as compared to DEC’s mere 29.56% . On thé other hand , Chesapeake’s div yield is only 2.11% against DEC’s 9.73% and Chesapeake’s p/e is 15.32 . So , a much bigger player moving in to natural gas in a similar geographical area to DEC .

We get reports of average forward sales prices but they are a mix of deals done recently and deals done years ago. The current price of a typical contract sold now compared to one sold a couple of years ago must have about doubled. Add in less than 10% sold at near spot prices and the current average sales price of new contracts done today must have slightly more than doubled over two years.

DEC is a tiddler by US standards. The debts and hedging could easily be absorbed by a bigger fish, should they choose to bite.

The very heavy short term hedging could put off a buyer although it is integral to DECs strategy.

Spangle,

Just a general thought, no one in mind specifically. It's just too cheap and the sector is flush with cash.
