25/2/2013 19:53 | You've hit the nail on the head Chris it's the big supermarkets that the consumer just doesn't trust anymore and that will take much longer to remedy. I feel this benefit will be felt for years. Even IKEA has stripped it's meatballs from the stores. | battlebus2
25/2/2013 19:39 | The comparison with mad cow disease is weird actually. The current scandal is supermarkets and household brands flogging products under false pretence. Confidence in the supermarket retailers and readymeal brands have taken a big knock. Confidence in supermarket meat-based ready meals, burgers, sausages and mince in particular will take some time to restore. To the benefit of butchers. Burger and sausage sales for BBQ season should also see a benefit to butchers. | chrisis33
25/2/2013 19:32 | Some negative points to ponder guys. Nothing that would worry me about my investment though. As long as the meat is local and says what it is on the tin that's fine by me. The point about value instead of higher margin i'm sure has been looked into by the team and is certainly not as simplistic as you make it sound to change to higher priced items, lots to consider like location for a start. S.L. you are correct about the steady 50,000 seller but you omitted to say that since the seller began the return on his sale has gone from 3.5/3.62/3.71/3.722/ As chrisis33 says what a difference an increase in turnover of just 5% could make to those profits. I'm expecting atleast that from the last six months to February. Always good to here some others views. Ali. | investali

25/2/2013 18:20 | BG - if there are regulatory changes you can bet they'll operate in favour of the large supermarkets that can lobby to get the changes they want, and then implement the changes using people and processes that are only a marginal cost to them because they do so much of that sort of stuff anyway. Crawshaws sells 'value' products to lower income consumers, hence their poor margins. I've always wondered why they never made any attempt to move upmarket using quality as the passkey to more value-added and higher margin products. I concluded that the management was clueless and I've never really seen anything to mitigate that opinion. | supernumerary

25/2/2013 16:46 | sn, I think the difference between this scare and the mad cow disease, is that this time there's much more talk about traceability and the length of the supply chain. There will almost certainly be regulatory changes which may act in favour of short supply chain butchers. One thing with Crawshaws that concerns me a little is that there is nothing visible on their website about meat sourcing. Do their cutting shops just look for cheapest supply and don't care about source? Surely they should be making the most of sourcing local produce? At present their whole offering seems to focus on "value", when we want "quality" and "local" stressed at present. | briangeeee
25/2/2013 14:02 | To the plus side: "The National Federation of Meat and Food Traders reports a 15% increase in sales at independent butchers". Even if 5% additional trade sticks, that's around £1m extra revenue over the course of 1 year. | chrisis33
25/2/2013 12:38 | A degree of caution merited. See this report from The Economist: Final paragraph: 'But whether the boost to either will endure after the horse furore recedes is doubtful. Recalling his customers' attitudes after the "mad cow disease" outbreak 17 years ago, Mr Addy gloomily observes that, "after three months, they slope back to supermarkets." ' | supernumerary
25/2/2013 08:49 | Looking at reports across the industry, 10% to 20% increases in sales are widely referenced. Bid/offer both up to 3.8 v 4.18 | chrisis33
24/2/2013 19:27 | Butchers and fishmongers all seem to congregate around my local farm shop. You have the Whitby fish man selling out the back of his van and our local butcher also has his mobile unit outside. They have built a good reputation by simply working together to benefit all involved. | playful
24/2/2013 18:58 | It is amazing how many local areas no longer have a butcher (or a grocer/fishmonger etc) | knigel
24/2/2013 18:01 | The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) said many of its members who own butchers shops have reported a dramatic increases in sales following the discovery of horsemeat in some food products. It is urging consumers to shop local and support their independent retailers. | playful
