No mention of the main event.
All peripheral activities appear to be hard hit.

£800k in not bad for a £2.5m company.

Expectations were for flat operating profits which would be £1.17m.

Clipper Ventures plc

Trading Update

Clipper Ventures Plc ('Clipper', the 'Company' or the 'Group'), the AIM quoted ocean racing company, today announces that since the publication of the Company's half year results, on 27 November 2008, economic uncertainty has continued, which has lead to price reductions in the Corporate Entertainment market. As a consequence the Company has taken the decision to reduce its expected level of sales and its margins in its Corporate Sailing Division. Similarly the market for Sail Training is proving difficult and as such the Company has reduced its expected level of income in this division. The Company is not expecting to see an operating profit for the year to 30 April 2009 from its subsidiary Zapcat Racing Ltd, which is facing a very difficult event sponsorship environment. As part of a general cost review the Company is actively seeking buyers for the division. Neither a profit nor a loss on disposal is included in the Company's forecasts.

As a result of these revisions of expectation the Group anticipates its operating profit for the year ending 30 April 2009 may be around £800,000, significantly lower than management's expectation in November 2008, and the Group does not expect to see significant growth in profitability while the economic environment remains challenging."

About the Balance Sheet ...

This is the fourth Balance Sheet Date since the enforced placing back in Feb 07. It really does pay to look at NTAV per share, NTAV minus Prop, Plant & Equip per share and NCA per share from 30 April 07 onwards. The number of shares in issue has been constant since then.

----

NTAV per share (p) ...

Apr 07 - 8.82
Oct 07 - 9.94
Apr 08 - 11.32
Oct 08 - 11.57

NTAV increased by 2.75p (38% of current SP) in 18 months.

----

NTAV minus P, P & E per share (p) ...

Apr 07 - (2.87)
Oct 07 - (1.09)
Apr 08 - 0.71
Oct 08 - 1.34

NTAV minus P, P & E increased by 4.21p (58% of current SP) in 18 months.

----

NCA per share (p) ...

Apr 07 - (2.97)
Oct 07 - (1.41)
Apr 08 - 2.47
Oct 08 - 4.7

NCA increased by 7.67p (106% of current SP) in 18 months.

----

All this growth based on an share price of 7.25p.

It just looks way too cheap to me.

IMO, DYOR ...

Interim results are out.

Difficult to compare with last year due to race seasonality but the big plus for me is the increase in NCA of 861k. I've said before that the growth in the Balance Sheet is as important as the P&L in valuing this stock. Here we see a 100k growth in NTAV in the last six months but a 861k growth in NCA.

I am sure I saw an RNS about the California entry, along with a positive quote for good old Arny. There can not be many if any boats left available for the next race?

Why no RNS for the previous deal with California (or did I miss it) ?

How many boats are now accounted for in the next race ?

That news has obviously hit the market like a damp squid.

I can`t see what will move this share in the short term, other than a bid.

I wonder if Knox will get a official Rns released about the following
contract, if not then you can clearly see he wants as much stock on the
cheap because this is major news imho.

Arnie signs up California for 2009/10

State Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has thrown his support behind America's first west coast entry in the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race. Clipper Ventures Plc is pleased to announce that California will field a racing yacht in the next edition of the biennial event and host a stopover when the fleet races in from China in April 2010.

California will compete against nine other internationally sponsored ocean racing yachts in a gruelling 35,000-mile circumnavigation of the globe.

In a letter of support, Governor Schwarzenegger says, "California is honoured to be a stop on this voyage, and especially to have one of the participating yachts named after our state. I have no doubt that California will be the best boat out there and that all the vessels will receive a warm welcome from the Golden State when they reach our shores."

On 13 September 2009 the Clipper fleet will set sail from the Humber in the north east of England returning on 3 July 2010 after ten months of ocean racing and 14 port stopovers. The only round the world yacht race for non-professional sailors brings together crews from all walks of life and different nationalities who are joined by the desire to take on the challenge of a lifetime and represent their countries on a global stage.

Chairman and founder of the Clipper Race, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, says, "We're delighted the yacht California has the backing of Governor Schwarzenegger and I am sure this campaign will ignite enthusiasm not just in the state but throughout America. Importantly this project is not just for sailors; it is about people who want to stand above their peers, release their potential, and achieve their personal goals – just the qualities Californians are renowned and respected for."

Earlier this year, the race saw its first west coast stop as the fleet put in to Santa Cruz at the end of the North Pacific leg of the Clipper 07-08 Race. The welcome and hospitality extended by the Santa Cruz Yacht Club proved so popular with crews – and created such an impact on the sailing community locally – that the yacht club set up a committee to raise support for a greater involvement in the next race.

One Californian delighted by the news that her home state is to field an entry in Clipper 09-10 is 39-year-old Shana Bagley, a deputy attorney from Walnut Creek, California, who has recently been accepted as a crew member on the race.

Shana says, "It's fantastic news that there will be a boat called California in the Clipper 09-10 Race and I hope that other Californians take this opportunity to join me in representing our state around the world. I'm sure the Californian stopover will be lots of fun and that the Clipper fleet will receive a spectacular welcome."

It is not too late for Californians to join Shana to represent their state in this global sporting event. Berths are still available for the Clipper 09-10 Race. Clipper Crew Recruitment Manager David Cusworth will be in California between 3 and 9 December 2008 and will hold a series of presentations across the state for those wishing to take on the challenge of a lifetime. For further details on the presentations or applying to become a crew member email: oceanracer@clipperroundtheworld.com, or telephone: +44 (0) 2392 526000.

Seems almost too generous in Bob Dench´s case - most unusual for a NonExec to be granted more options than the Chief Executive and Chairman.

Worth reading the RNS about the option grants. Seems pretty reasonable to me with an eps hurdle rate at RPI + 6% and a strike at 8.75p. Keeps Bob Dench interested too I suspect.

Fair point about Dench´s track record Des, but I am bound to say that since he sold his entire holding of 300,000 shares some two years ago I had rather forgotten that he was still on the Board. Strange that he has not seen fit to buy any stock back at less than one third of the price that he sold out at. As regards the concert party issue I am still not sure that you are right about this but I am going to take the trouble to find out exactly what the rule book says.
