03/1/2010 17:58 | China and Asean free trade deal begins A new free trade area comes into effect on Friday, incorporating China and the six founding members of the Association of South East Asian Nations (Asean). These countries include Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. They plan to eliminate tariffs on 90% of imported goods. This will reduce the cost of trade and is likely to lead to an expansion of cross border commerce between the countries concerned. In terms of population it will be the largest trade area in the world, with nearly 1.9bn people and it includes some of the leading export driven economies. Cheaper materials Chinese manufacturers will gain and so will South East Asian exporters of raw materials. Those countries are also likely to gain access to cheaper materials and components from China. But there have been warnings from South East Asia that some industries are not ready to compete with China and that jobs will be lost. Other members of Asean , including Vietnam and Cambodia are due to follow suite in five years. Regional and bilateral trade agreements have proliferated in recent years. The World Trade Organization says about 400 are due to be in operation by 2010. Supporters say they are a step on the way towards comprehensive global trade liberalisation. But critics say they undermine that effort and put poor countries left out at a disadvantage. | qipincha

30/12/2009 15:03 | Annual results last year were 10 February. I've had an email back from the company today. The official prices of diesel etc are "instructive" only and are still subject to forces of demand and supply. In other words, when demand for petrochemicals is relatively weak as per now, margins get squeezed irrespective of what is happening to official retail prices. Demand for CBI products will strengthen as the Chinese economy expands, I think we just need to be patient. It appears someone is bailing out at the moment and this will provide a topping up opportunity, judgement will be required when they are close to completing their sales. | tim00

24/11/2009 09:09 | Just getting over the last RNS, and then poleaxed by HAIK. That's the way I see it, despite the fact that I see less risk, and more upside, with CBI. I'd expect the share price to slowly recover to 11-12p, but any further progress to hinge on the next trading update and/or results. So, as ever, a long hold... :0) | taurusthebear

19/11/2009 13:02 | why are we down 10% on no news?? the haike warning is a catch up, cbi has its "warning" a few wks ago, since when product prices have risen quite sharply. and cbi has subsidies which prevent it from going to a loss :) | aim11 |
