I had the ups and downs of gambling legislation with SBT. Not going there again. Although I appreciate your drawing the news to my attention as it is interesting. Thanks.

Aleman: have you had a look at the results today for GVC Holdings? Dividend up 50%! one of the highest yielders and share price up nicely too.

Rising bond yields seem to be helping a number of shares troubled by pension deficits. SDV's largest holding, Macfarlane, is up 10% today.

ASCH and SDV seem to move very similarly so it is interesting to see that ASCH's NAV has jumped slightly to a post-recession high. I'm hoping to see a good showing from SDV this week, tempered by the fact they went ex-dividend.

New high NAV for the year at ASCH (I think) bodes well for SDV.

WHat do we reckon to the ZDP share issue? Essentially, it replaces £4.6m debt and interest of £350k (but set to rise slightly) with £8.5m ZDPs accumulating at 6% that will pay out £11.2m in 5 1/3 years. Only the 1/4 of the interest saving booked to income is freed up towards dividends but there will be extra income from the £4m expansion of investments to join it, which should see the dividend add about 7-8% (?) in time ,at the expense of some capital growth in the long term and greater volatility with the higher gearing.
THe £510k due to ZDP each year will be offset by the 3/4 saving of interest booked to capital I suppose that makes the net cost of the £4m expansion of investments about £250k per year.

It seems okay to me. Higher gearing at a fractionally lower rate which converts a modest slice of future capital gain into modest extra income today.

I see MACF have picked up touch recently and are now the top holding. (See header.) It's worth noting that their interim dividend is under threat of being deferred (not axed) and paid with the final.

Was wondering why NAV was doing quite well just lately. I've noticed that 8th biggest holding, Smiths News, are up over 20% since the June 30th holding statement, showing 2.29%, on the back of a good update, with 9% of that being this week.
