carcosaAgree about there not being a moat but they are very selective in their franchise locations and franchisees, in terms of demographics and religious beliefs in order to maximise their customer base.IMO it's early days to make judgements about the managements appetite (no pun intended) for growth. The two co-founders of the franchise business model have a lot of skin in the game, over 50%, so would expect they have sufficient motivation to drive earnings and capital growth.DD

Graham's comments in yesterday's stocko:hTTps://www.stockopedia.com/content/small-cap-value-report-fri-6-july-2018-carluccios-ffx-igp-ipx-hipgnosis-cbox-380164/He mentions net income £3m, Im hoping it's going to be closer to £4m based on previous growth rates (2018 was £2.8m). That's a PE of 16.5 and a PEG of 0.36.DD

Cake Box - (CBOX) - Recent listing with questionable management?

I'm surprised that Paul Scott aka Paulypilot or Graham Neary hadn't commented on these, unless I've missed their article.

Guess the share price increase late pm may have been due to Robbie Burns (the naked trader) giving them a decent mention on his website:"The number of shops is increasing rapidly and I wonder whether at some point not too far away the company will be bought up by a bigger group (Pattiserie Valerie or some such?).I kind of expected it to come to the market very highly priced but actually the sellers weren't greedy and I thought it was priced reasonably. So I helped myself to a couple of slices of shares. (Every one a winner!).I was tempted to top-slice (Gettit?) after the Mail on Sunday tipped it but decided to hold on rather than take a few crumbs of profit."Put a small long spread bet on myself on Tuesday.DD

Investor relations:

Admission document:

"Cake Box is a franchise retailer and manufacturer of cakes with a growing store base across the UK.

The first concept store opened in East London in 2008 from which the Group has grown to a franchise estate of 91 stores as at 13 June 2018. The Group specialises in making high quality, individually-crafted and personalised fresh cream cakes for purchase on demand or ordered in advance in store or online. In March 2018, Cake Box was recognised as one of the 100 fastest growing companies by turnover in the UK in the 2018 Sunday Times Virgin 100 Fast Track league table.

The Group’s cakes are completely egg free, which the Directors believe has no effect on taste and texture and allows the Group to service a much larger potential market, including those customers who are unable to eat eggs for dietary or religious reasons.

The Group has grown predominantly through franchise expansion and today does not directly own or operate any of Cake Box’s stores, although its Executive Directors have all previously run their own franchise stores.

The Group’s franchise estate has grown rapidly in recent years, from 19 stores as at 31 March 2013 to 91 franchise stores as at 13 June 2018."

...Since the company, through its finest quality 100 per cent egg free cakes, have touched millions of lives across the UK, it was recently featured on The Sunday Times Fast Track 100 list of Britain's fastest-growing private companies...

"In 2008, we opened our very first Eggfree Cake Box store, and now 10 years later we are pleased to announce that we are opening our 90th branch in the UK. We plan to open another 30 stores in the next twelve months. Our aim is to have at least one Eggfree Cake Box branch in every major town across the UK," says the company...

So basically one of their competitors calls in a loan note, forces them probably into administration and then bids for their machines/placements on the cheap? is that allowed?

The debt levels at this company simply scare me.
They seem to have embarked on an expansion at all costs strategy and are continuely having to renegotiate their banking arrangements at ever increasing rates of interest (not to mention fees).

With admin expenses running at circa £5m a year their t/o will need to be nearer £14m just to break even and I don't see that without getting more machines in place (further adding to costs)

Even when we see breakeven they are sitting on millions in debt so dividends and returns are years away even if they keep the wolves from the door....

curry - New management. The secret weapon is the increase in free to use cash machines. Currently only 10% of their machine's are f-t-u but they generate 15% of total traffic. They claim they may make break-even next year and profit after that. Not a racer then but possibly not a write-off either.
