National Grid gets back-up power supply

The UK power industry has provided more electricity generation after a request from the National Grid.

There had not been a risk of electricity supplies being disrupted, it said.
National Grid earlier issued a Notification of Inadequate System Margin (NISM) as a result of multiple energy plant breakdowns.

"The market duly responded to this signal," the company said.

The National Grid described the NISM as "one of the routine tools that we use to indicate to the market that we would like more generation to come forward for the evening peak demand period".

An additional 500 megawatts had been requested between 16.30 and 18.30 on Wednesday.

The company last issued a NISM in February 2012, and before that in 2009.

When a notification is issued, generators with spare capacity can respond quickly, ramping up supply within the system.

The National Grid said that if this failed to happen it had standby contracts with some gas-fired stations.

It also has "demand side management" contracts with businesses, which allow the grid to ask them to reduce energy consumption at specified times.

"More generation came forward and about 40 MW of demand side balancing reserve was ordered so the NISM has been withdrawn," National Grid said.

The National Grid plans to increase significantly its use of demand side management to keep the system in balance.

Lower supplies

Last month, the National Grid said gas supplies for the winter months were "comfortable", while electricity supplies were "manageable".

It said the supply of electricity exceeded demand by 5.1%, but only after additional supplies had been secured, such as paying plants to remain on standby.

This is the lowest rate in seven years.

There have been some concerns expressed that the UK could suffer from blackouts as a result of short supplies, brought about in large part from the closure of a number of power stations that have come to the end of their working lives.

Brian Strutton from the GMB union said: "The UK government and National Grid are far too complacent about the risks of widespread power blackouts."

However, the National Grid and many experts have dismissed these concerns.

There has been one generation-related electricity outage in the past 10 years, according to a study commissioned by the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit.

Interesting video about Nice Grid, the first smart solar-energy district demonstration project to be conducted in France.

The video demonstrates a "smart grid" including the siting of three storage systems within the system serving the connected local districts.

The opportunities appear significant when such smart grids become commonplace.

[Note - if the video reverts to French then the "FR/En" options are available at the top right side of the page.]

A SMART GRID DEMONSTRATION PROJECT IN CARROS.

VIDEO - 6:31 MINS

Nice Grid is the first smart solar-energy district demonstration project to be conducted in France.

This ambitious project, which brings together a broad range of stakeholders, is located in the municipality of Carros, in the department of Alpes-Maritimes, near the French Riviera. The objective will be to develop a smart electricity grid that harmoniously integrates a high proportion of solar panels, energy storage batteries and intelligent power meters installed in the homes of volunteer participants. By giving energy users the opportunity to manage their power consumption and budget, Nice Grid intends to turn passive consumers into active “pro-sumers” (producer-consumers).

Granted funding under France’s first Future Investments Program, the Nice Grid smart solar district project will comprehensively test the smart grid concept by implementing the Linky smart meter, other innovative technologies and existing power infrastructure.

Nice Grid intends to make Carros a technology showcase and a pilot site for intelligent and environmentally sustainable grid operation and management.

REDT are exhibiting at European Utility Week - Vienna on 3-5 November 2015.

Delivery of the first 2015 production ESS and announcement of the change in name from Camco Clean Energy to REDT was timely, ahead of this major international event.

I suspect that the coming weeks and months are going to be very interesting for the Company and its shareholders.

That'll be sales driven or someone with money taking an interest, they've had bad luck with carbon credits, Africa feels philantrophic at the moment. History lags on the chart. Hopefully the new exciting venture, now ready, will generate a frenzy of exciting news for RedT Energy Plc. Not the historically quiet unlucky Camco and properly push the price.

Proposed change of name to RedT Energy plc
Name change reflects Company's core focus on commercialising its RedT energy storage product.
Camco Clean Energy (AIM: CCE), today announces its intention to change its name to RedT Energy plc. The name change reflects the Company's core focus to commercialise RedT's energy storage product.
After an extensive period of research, development and prototyping, RedT has recently delivered its first manufactured production unit. This launches RedT into the commercialisation phase of its business and accordingly is an appropriate time for a change in the holding company name to reflect this focus.
The Company will continue to operate and develop its African clean energy business activities under the name Camco Clean Energy, independently as a subsidiary of RedT Energy.
The proposed change in name is subject to shareholder approval at a General Meeting to be held at 11.00 a.m. on 24 November 2015 at Suite 4.12, Clerkenwell Workshops, 31 Clerkenwell Close, London EC1R 0AT. Following the approval by shareholders of the change in name, the Company also intends to change its EPIC/TIDM from "CCE" to "RED".
Scott McGregor, CEO said: "RedT Energy, now in its commercialisation phase, brings to the market a highly sought after long duration and heavy duty stationary energy storage product. The name change of the Company to RedT Energy communicates clearly our product to energy storage customers and investors."
