Not much gets talked about the financial exposure outside the UK...hope those Italians not cooking up the books again!...not followed that Italian saga...does BT still have that unit?...

There may be a new, post virus economy, which BT should benefit from but we won’t see that emerging until after lockdown and won’t see the company economic benefits until the year after that.

Diku,

Normally I wouldn't touch a share like BT with a bargepole, but moves like this generate opportunity, especially when everything is treated the same when it clearly isn't.

EMG (Man Group) clearly case in point - absolutely punished as a financial but dear Colonelgrim kept putting up his charts showing the main funds doing very well on the downturn... Hence a v shaped recovery. (also a decent yield with a reasonably well funded divi).

This has had no recovery since the fall, likely related to the divi/business uncertainty. As above I do not see the business being affected. people these days will do without food before their broadband. I also think that being relatively good to staff will help. BT has been a bit of a punch-bag over the last few years and may just be emerging a patriotic market leader! (perhaps only since talk talk/virgin/etc even worse..)

I held these types of share for the long term stability and the divi. That’s all gone now, especially for banks and telcos. I punt on smaller shares and AIM but very volatile. Now everything is volatile and we don’t get a divi.

On topic, the upcoming results are for pre virus business, up to Dec so should be as expected. A divi cut is forward looking so I guess is the main driver here, plus any forward looking statements such as “we don’t expect any new business or growth this year”.

Hence it makes you wonder if this share malaki for PI's really worth it...you might get lucky on the odd occasion here and there but sooner or later you come unstuck...

monty...once upon a time investing meant something...goal posts of that meaning are moving wider by the day...yes investors like the divi that is...once they buy the shares hope the price keeps going up...not down...that is not investing...no point getting a tiny divi if you capital is eroded substantially more than the divi over the coming years...think of those who bought big amount around 400p on the way down from 500p?...how they feeling...

Markets like certainty which Thursday will bring so hopefully that’s where we might see the share price start to improve.

Investors like a dividend, traders don't care.

Surely BT is one of the few companies not affected by the present problems with the Cov 19 at least we should buy it for that.

My decision to buy was based on this alone not the dividend ,a 5% yield would be a good result in todays interest rate climate.

Never buy an equity for its yield!! By product only.

This is nicely ‘managed’; news. If the cut is >50% then the shares may take another dip but remain a pretty solid medium/long term play at 109ish, PE now <5 ffs. If the cut is only 25% and there looks to be maintained profits/turnover steady then 150 beckons. May just be sensible to buy and hold whatever happens to the rest of the market.

Surely investors did not think no cut in these markets, 35% cut would be a massive result for investors.

Was it deliberate attempt that Bt divi cut reported in sunday news paper to counter positive impact of O2 roumered merger with Virgin so it do not open above 120p?

I thought 50% cut, Sunday Times 35% cut, what a yield if only 35% cut, hope they are right and I'm wrong.

but benefit would be based on Bt winning the bid to cover these additional packages. Another huge investment would be necessary to secure the rights.

After the Shock of Shell dividend cut nothing would surprise, but a 35% cut is a great result. I thought 50% cut, hope I'm wrong and Sunday Times right.

They know it's been leaked I reckon, it's called managing expectations, I forecast 50% cut so 35% would be a fantastic result.

A cut or deferral in the current climate wouldn't exactly be a surprise would it? I'd take the opportunity to defer it and re-start it later.

Journo uses the word Potential!...So is potential 35% the starting point?...and 35% cut is the on the final divi and the iterim will also be rebased later or 35% is the total cut?...

The times is reporting a potential 35% cut to the dividend.
