One of the UK's largest credit insurer providers has slashed cover for suppliers to Boohoo PLC in a move that threatens to exacerbate the financial pressures facing the fast-fashion retailer.

Allianz Trade has reduced cover by an average of 50% for Boohoo's suppliers, but some suppliers have had their coverage level cut to zero, effective from September.

Credit insurance is a vital part of the retail supply chain, protecting suppliers against the risk of customers going bust between the point of accepting an order and payment being made.

When cover is not available, suppliers should always demand payment upfront.

At the end of February 2023, Boohoo PLC only had a net cash position of £5.9 million and is heavily reliant on a £325 million Revolving Credit Facility coupled with the goodwill of its Lenders.

Although shares in Boohoo PLC peaked at 413p three years ago, they have since lost a staggering 91% of their value, as costs soared and demand for fast fashion clothing went into decline.

Boohoo has been hit particularly hard by the emergence of SHEIN, a Chinese fast fashion rival that undercuts Boohoo on price by shipping clothing directly from factories in China to the consumers’ homes.
