I see your point Scarab 4 days is a long time to halt trading for a straight forward operations announcement be it good or bad . The scarce comment available on other boards suggests that the news is likely to be positive and non operational .

At a guess this leaves the following corporate scenarios - Take over , JV , Fund raising .... If they choose to release the information start of Monday trading in Oz we may know around 11.00 tonight (UK time) .

Why would an announcement about in-pit mining taking place require a 4 day suspension though? Even on th ASX? Fingers crossed here anyway...

Strange that the London Aim Market is still open for BGF despite the fact it is halted in Australia . Spoke to a member of Aim today who told me this is as a result of different procedure policy between ASX and AIM . Seems that whilst ASX thought the pending announcement justified a halt in trading , AIM regulators see it differently .

There's certainly been a lot of talk in Australia about BGF as a takeover target , you've probably read my earlier posts that were copied from some Australian bulletin boards . To have this confirmed on Monday would be excellent news , far more likely though an announcement re in pit mining as this was always scheduled for start of December - we'll just have to wait and see !

Spooky - no post for 18 days and we both post at the exact same time Vic!

It's a relatively long suspension so presumably management are considering something, my guess (and hope, obviously) is a bid offer.

The shares are at an all time high 14.5 offer 13.9 bid last time I was quoted and now suspended surely this is a lead up to good news - takeover , drilling results , merger , mining commencement ???? - Any coments !

Ballarat Goldfields N.L.
20 October 2005

ASX and Media release: 20 October 2005

Chairman's Address - AGM 20 October 2005

EXTRACT FROM FULL RNS:
To date, it is fair to say that we have had nothing but positive confirmation of
the geological model. Definitional drilling of the zones of first production is
well advanced with encouraging outcomes. To date, development has been
difficult, hampered by varying ground conditions, but is improving with depth
and new procedures.

Along the way, BGF has developed and refined our Vision, to 'Become a Major
Australian Gold Producer'. We identified then, and continue to believe, that our
platform for growth is the progressive unlocking of the potential of the
Ballarat field.

In order to achieve this we have embarked on a number of parallel objectives.

These can be summarised by the following actions:
• The rapid and focused development of the Ballarat East project including
ongoing geological drilling and understanding.
• The geological modelling of Berringa.
• The acquisition of Ballarat South.
• The step out drilling of the Yarowee Creek holes to define the boundary of,
and begin the exploration of Ballarat West.

All of these projects add up to an impressive potential platform from which to
pursue organic growth, and comprised the basis for BGF to make a transition from
explorer, to self funded developer.

As we have stated, we believe the medium term outlook for the global economy is
uncertain and that gold and unhedged gold stocks will provide an attractive
investment option. BGF, with cash in hand and no hedging in place, is well
placed within this framework.

Good to see some steady consolidation at this price . We should have a firm base for any new push on news . Here's hoping the next move will take BGF up to the 15/16 pence mark . Still waiting for confirmation of in pit mining commencement .

Here's some light reading from the Hotcopper website ( Australian Bulletin board ) , the basic discussion relates to BGF and another company BDG ( Bendigo mining ) which is also in Victoria area of Oz . Interesting to see people already talking about both as takeover targets for Major gold producers !

would not be surprised if it bgf was taken over soon ... with those levels of assets... they are a prime takeover target.

They will need at least 6 months operating history before a big brother such as Goldfields steps up to the plate IMO.

Similar argument for BDG....maybe a quinella in 2006/7?

Dont reckon your time frame is quite right.

BDG will not be in a position to take over the other two until at least 2007/8

Evening sport,

your assumption is that BDG may gobble BGF?

My assumption is that desperate American/African will take them both!

Good quality ounces, comparatively low cost/profitability, long mine lives-just what these 'foreigners' pay a premium for.

Probably NCM disappears first (Newmont?)

BGF second (Goldfields?)

Quickly followed by BDG (goldfields once again?)

Newmont is the most desperate to replace ounces.

And Goldfields? Well they are quietly exploring north of Bendigo, and the MD of Ballarat was at one stage a director of the local subsidiary and no doubt retains friendships!

Barrack is also getting desperate-it may have a tilt at OXR if Teck or Phelps Dodge don't get their act together by the start of 2006.

And Anglo-always the bridesmaid!LOL

Just winding you up before Tas.

Agree with your possible scenario,... and at around six or seven dollars a share, I can sell em a few BDG.

But isn't it good that the two historically major Victorian gold mining provinces are both looking so promising.

Our friends from the west seem to have missed the fact that Victorians move back into power in the gold sector within 12 months.

Newcrest head office?

The best quality middle rankers to produce in excess of 100,000 ounces per annum_LVR,PSV,BGF and BDG.

All with comparatively long mine lifes, offer superb locations for family upbringing (a critical factor across the industry if you want good staff rather than drug addicts!LOL), etc etc etc.

Even Walhalla may have another lease of life! Yes another high grade multi million ounce deposit! Don't see too many of those in the west these days owned by Australians (at least for the moment anyway!LOL)

I know what you mean G_B , things don't always seem to go quite the way one would expect them to . I think the key thing to remember here , is that the share price conversions are based on two factors share volume and exchange rate fluctuation . I've followed these shares since March and one pattern that is obvious is that it does not take great trading volume in the UK to push the price up or down . If it makes you feel any better on the Australian bulletin boards I have seen posters pointing out that the share price is often weighted in favour of UK shareholders .

Have you had a chance to read through the BGF website - some of the other projects have great potential !

More press comment in Aus: (taken from )

Richard Morrow, a director of E. L. & C. Baillieu, said Perseverance Corporation, Ballarat Goldfields, Bendigo Mining and Leviathan Resources offered good prospects.

Mr Morrow said he expected gold stocks to rise on the back of a higher bullion price.

"But gold, by its very nature, is a speculative investment," he said.

Mr Morrow said Ballarat Goldfields had "six million ounces in the ground" and was expected to extract about 100,000 ounces a year. Production was about to start and should grow over time.

Mr Morrow said the company's market capitalisation had increased from about $10 million to about $210 million in 18 months.

"It's a quality company and management has done a great job so far," he said.
