i think the question should be why not? There is a high frequency trading algorithm at work here as the volume is now over 13m shares (that is 6.5% of the entire share capital) yet the buy and sell volumes are quite matched. This started yesterday and will probably continue for a few days before the targets are hit and the traders move on. It will drag in the share spread-betters due to the spike and the volume and they will get toasted. To put the volume into context, 15M plus days can be counted on one hand in the last 5 years and each has usually been accompanied by an announcement from the company - not the case this time.
