There was so much fracking froth added to this share that it's just fallen back to more sensible levels.

As I didn't particularly put any value on the shale assets under our ownership I'm very happy they've been bought. The added benefit that we not only have a finger in that LONG term pie but also have a finger in Egdons other upcoming assets.

I only assign a bonus nature to that and we are circulating at present at the floor based on our CMM/Power response assets.

This will creep and creep now on the confirmation of any keeping-to-the-path news and the steady build in dividends.

I can see all the good news and have added but wonder why the share price is not reacting accordingly

Good to see from Amati's UK Smaller Companies Fund newsletter for November (just e-mailed out) that they.ve been adding more ALK:

"We also added modestly to our position in Alkane Energy, an
independent ‘gas to power’ electricity generator operating in a market that attracts premium rates for meeting temporary supply shortages in the National Grid."

He's always liked them, riv.
Bought some more today.
I think that the UK's energy supply couldn't be worse if it had been designed to fail, so I reckon ALK will be in a sweet spot.
Anyroadup, it's nice to be back in.

Looks like Malcom Graham-Wood will be tipping ALK for 2015:

"Alkane Energy Alkane has announced its biggest ever contract, talk about finding a quiet day to bury good news! DECC has announced its Capacity Programme Awards and Alkane has won a contact for cost effective fast response engines which will add revenue of £14.4m and more importantly give long term visibility over 15 years. This is definitely a stock to hang on in there with and for sure will be on the ’15 bucket list…"

Made the mistake of selling these years ago (about 27p).
Panicked about life of coal mine gasification and sold a bloody good company!
Bought back in on the general malaise.
Only 20,000 shares, but it's a start.
Might be further weakness in the New Year.

Good to see you here GHF - and good to hear it's difficult to get hold of stock.

Brief broker comment - more to come, glad it'll be funded from cheap debt and not equity....

[...]

Extract:

"Neil O'Brien, Alkane's chief executive, said he was delighted with the agreement.

“Once confirmed by the Secretary of State this will be the largest ever contract award in Alkane's 20 year history and will be further affirmation that our cost effective fast response engines are a much valued asset by the UK Energy Market.

“These agreements, with a combined additional revenue of £14.4m, would provide us with long term income visibility stretching over a 15 year period."

VSA Capital said Alkane is now committed to roll-out a further 46MW of capacity by October 2018, which it estimates will cost £15mln over the next four years, and is likely to be debt funded

“The agreements demonstrate the importance of Alkane’s fast response, flexible, cost effective, reliable generating fleet to the National Grid and we would expect further successful bids from Alkane in future auctions.”"

If I read this right it is an extra payment just to ensure generating capacity is there, even though it will be used in the normal way? It does sound a bit odd at first sight but it makes sense given the loss of flexible capacity from the generating mix over recent years. It certainly gives long-term visibility to new revenue stream.

The problem as far as the current share price is concerned is that this is jam tomorrow, SPs tend to discount most of that. However, unlike 99% of jam tomorrow announcements this jam is definitely there.

Very interesting.

However electricity prices DON'T track the price of oil do they? No one burns oil for electricity in UK!

Cheaper oil and petrol lowers one of the main business costs for ALK however - the mobile support and engineering team visiting the remotely run sites!

The alternative way of looking at the tux22 related post is that the lower cost of oil reflects the lack of demand due to lower industrial activity. I view cheaper fuel to be a consequence of lower demand from industry rather than something that will drive industrial productivity. Of course the alternative perspective for the drop in oil is that its over-supply. The truth likely lies somewhere between the two! Either way, ALK does seem to track oil prices so when oil recovers so will ALK!

There is also the question of Alkane's shares in potential fracking sites and companies which might be weighing a bit too.

I hope they are right. If generating capacity is the limiting factor then there could be a disconnect of electricity and oil prices. Most of Alkane's sales are priced a year in advance anyway.

Hopefully they will be able to reduce the quantity of forward priced sales over the next few months, otherwise they will just lock in today's rubbish prices.
