Hargreaves virtually done - AJb next for PE and Middle East sov wealth

Did you fail to notice the general global market meltdown since last Weds? Bound to have affected assets under management in the short term, so no surprise to see AJB fall back.

hmm

Well we are back in bargain territory thanks to the "it has gone up a lot so lets sell" mentality of the the unthinking.

14% decline in 4 days.

Business is the same and growing like topsy.

I do not see pensions going out of fashion any time soon.

Japan and Nvidia have created a nice price.

At today's close AJB is now cheaper that it was at this time in 2019 and yet it is nearly 4 times as profitable as it was in 2019

2019 interim profit £17 million
2024 interim profit £61 million

AJ Bell plc posted a trading update for the 3 months ended 30 June 2024 yesterday. Assets under administration closed at £83.7 billion, up 20% over the last year and 4% in the quarter. Customer numbers increased by 25,000 in the quarter to close at 528,000, up 13% in the last year and 5% in the quarter. The share price is in a solid uptrend, valuation is no longer cheap with forward PE ratio around 21.4x, but the share has traded on significantly higher multiples in recent years so valuation is not yet prohibitive either. The balance sheet is strong with negative net debt, dividend yield is average. AJB ticks a lot of the right boxes and it is currently in a clear uptrend. BUY...

AJB could be next?
Posted at 24/5/2024 07:07 by undervaluedassets
he owns circa 25% of the equity which yesterday I calculated was worth some 417 million quid

So 30 million is chicken feed.. He is entitled.

AJB has grown operating profits a lot faster lately than Hargreaves ..130% operating profit growth over last 4 years as opposed to 28% for Hargreaves.

Lot further to run on these as has been so ignored over the last 5 years

Woohoo, about time AJB. Faith has been awarded to all long term holders.

AJB has had good results for years now. Today's are the best ever and have beaten expectations.

Maybe finally, the shares will 'catch a breeze'; they have gone sideways or down for the last 4 years

Given the strong growth profile over the same period, they deserve to multi-bag.

Maybe you could have argued that they were expensive 4 years ago.

Well, they are just plain cheap now.

That's true - they might have to offload some bits. It might not be for a few years, but I think it will eventually happen. Their charging structures are relatively similar for their platform businesses (unlike ii for example) and AJB have the advantage of the growing service they offer to external advisors (which HL has never done and potentially missed out on).

Yes, market has taken the full year update pretty well - surprising as they've taken HL's Q1 update badly!

I topped up AJB at 257p yesterday, got it as a longer term SIPP investment, so happy to add more if there are further falls.

I think that ultimately HL and AJB will merge as its the only way to keep costs and prices competitive and compete with US brokers trying to invade their territory. Otherwise I can see HL going to private equity at some point.
