Alberto-Culver Awards Scholarships to Chicago-Area Students

MELROSE PARK, Ill., July 17  /PRNewswire/ -- The Alberto-Culver Company has announced ten recipients of their inaugural Leonard & Bernice Lavin Values Scholarship Program. Each student is graduating this year from a Chicago-area school and was nominated as being representative of one of the following ten values: Entrepreneurship, Improving our Communities, Values-based Leadership, Innovation, Ethics, Relentless Passion, A Builder of Teams, Winning Against the Odds, Family Values, and Dedication and Tenacity.

To celebrate the company's 50th anniversary in 2005, A-C's Board of Directors honored the company's founders, Leonard and Bernice Lavin, by establishing a perpetual scholarship fund. The program recognizes their establishment of a values-based culture at Alberto-Culver. The scholarship recognizes students who best exemplify the values most important to the Lavins.

Participating schools nominated students for outstanding accomplishment in a specific area. Winners were selected based on letters of recommendation and a personal essay. The scholarship carries a $5,000 award. The following students received the honor:

                     Victoria Grabowski (East Leydon)
                    Anna White (Oak Park River Forest)
                          Oscar Salgado (Latin)

                      Erika Chavez (Lyons Township)
                      Demetrius Moore (Morgan Park)
                       Samuel Cole (Whitney Young)

  The company plans on rotating this program among schools each year.
