"Downton said that 7digital is working on “a number of launches” of high-res streaming services in 2017 for clients, and that these services will go beyond pure audio quality."

2017 is going to be extremely exciting for 7Dig.The company charges set up and licensing fees both at very high margins. Recurring revenues then follow.Musical.ly that is up and running now has 40M users a day.

Excited to read two of our friends working together :) Congrats to SoundHound & Onkyo :)

SoundHound says it has now grown its user base to 175+ million, up from 100 million just a year ago. This is not the number of downloads, to be clear, but only those that have launched and used the app.

“Hound responds to users’ voice queries and gives them fast and accurate results for what they request, including local weather forecasts, finding a local coffee shop that matches specific criteria, searching and playing music, and much more,” said Katie McMahon, GM of Hound. “Users can voice their requests naturally as if they were speaking to a person — no keyword-based prompts or phrases needed — and can follow up to refine their results and get more done, faster.”

If you’ve always wanted an assistant to get your requests answered, Hound may be your answer. Smarter than your average Siri, Hound takes it a step further to help you make bookings and take action on requests made.

“The technology that powers Hound includes Speech-to-Meaning (TM) technology and advanced AI technology created by SoundHound Inc.,” continued McMahon. “This technology enables features that are truly differentiated, including the ability to speak naturally and conversationally. With Hound, you can also ask long and complex queries, like, “OK Hound, please show me hotels in San Francisco that are pet friendly and have a pool and free WiFi and are under $300 a night” and get results in seconds, decreasing the time it takes to book your next trip.”

The big three music labels have said they are all going Hi Res.

MQA is the platform.

MQA has one B2B music licensing and streaming partner.

7Dig.

7 Dig have just said this.

"Downton said that 7digital is working on “a number of launches” of high-res streaming services in 2017 for clients, and that these services will go beyond pure audio quality."

MQA have just said this.

Before the year is out, four to five services could be streaming high-res, said MQA chairman Bob Stuart. Stuart’s company developed Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) technology to reduce bandwidth requirements to make it practical to stream master-quality audio.

We can now be absolutely sure 7Dig are going to be "the share" in 2017 // 2018

..'headed to the mainstream'

Most of the world isnt interested to pay for streaming music...

So those interested in a 20 quid/month service ....almost zero imho.

And 7DIG has high fixed costs....it needs more income...just to stay afloat.

These are the types of licensing deals 7Dig does on behalf of MQA.

With these moves, a technology that was previously available to those in the industry and a small number of music fans is headed to the mainstream.

Here's some actual market size speculation:
hxxp://www.twice.com/news/ces/high-res-audio-streaming-gets-underway/63933

"High-resolution audio streams could spread high-res adoption by tapping into growing consumer demand for streaming music rather than downloading it. A Music Watch survey commissioned by DEG found that a premium music service offering high-res and other value adds could attract more than 12 million subscribers in the U.S., the DEG announced at CES"

Re market size, who knows. It certainly includes me though. (Though I agree with you that the extent of read across to 7DIG is debatable).

Another CES development yesterday pet lover drew to our attention was "All Three Major Labels, Pandora and RIAA Announce Support for Hi-Res Audio Streaming"

Some quotes pertaining to market size:

A new study commissioned ahead today's announcement by UMG, entitled "Global Insight: The Appeal of High-Res Audio (Studio Quality Sound)" presents a variety of data supporting a growing market for hi-res audio. The findings claimed that 85 percent of U.S. consumers say audio quality is "very important" to them; 48 percent of U.S. consumers are willing to pay more for better audio quality; and perhaps most significantly that "71 percent of existing music streaming subscribers are interested in the option of studio quality sound."

I am thrilled that the technology has evolved to the point that the authentic studio experience can now be streamed to the mainstream listener," Atlantic Records chairman and CEO Craig Kallman tells Billboard. "Fans love Hi-Res Audio when they hear it, and I believe we’re finally at the tipping point of converting the enormous streaming audience to the amazing Hi-Res musical experience."

MQA 1Mbps....imho too high for use with mobiles....

For home streaming use via ADSL phps it will take over from other coding options, perhaps....but if it does it will make money for the coding owner which is Meridian & not 7DIG
...nothing stopping Spotify, Deezer et al from changing to use it.

If 7DIG owned the compression coding & whole world used it then 7DIG cld be only streaming supplier offerring it....but they dont own it.

Dolby TrueHD was created by the same man/company apparently...pros/cons ?

How many ppl do you think are willing to pay 20 pnds/ month for an MQA streaming subscription ?

Imho negligible numbers

Noting that thousands of radio channels via internet with good quality are free....or Spotify etc for I think 5pnds..ad free.

(Myself...I just listen to radio via tv....just 1 button n remote ctrl.....& 1 button to later switch back to TV (& sometimes classic rock radio channel via internet)

Yes loobrush, plenty of people have heard it and it's the business.
You too can enjoy it on a 30 day free Tidal trial. Although it'll be a lot better to stump up for decent headphones and a MQA compatible DAC. Think the cheapest DAC would be the Meridian Explorer 2 at £129 from Amazon, but there's plenty of more expensive options.
