Exxon Mobil Corp. said compressor and air problems caused operational issues with "multiple units" and gas emissions at its refinery in Beaumont, Texas.
In a statement to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, the refinery said the above-normal emissions began Tuesday and lasted nearly 11 hours.
"Multiple unit upsets due to loss of instrument air and compressor," the refinery said in the regulatory filing. "An alternate line-up of instrument air was established and process streams were routed to flare to minimize emissions. Compressor has been restarted. Instrument technicians are currently troubleshooting the failure."
When asked for any additional details, Sarah Nordin, an Exxon spokeswoman, said Wednesday the company as a practice doesn't comment on specific units at refineries. "We continue to meet contractual commitments," she added.
The 362,000-barrel-a-day Beaumont refinery is 90 miles east of Houston.
