Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM) said Thursday it continues to assess operations at its Beaumont, Texas oil refinery amid heavy rainfall from Tropical Storm Imelda, and confirmed it has finished shutting its Beaumont chemical plant.
"ExxonMobil's Beaumont refinery and chemical complex is conducting a preliminary assessment to determine the impact of the storm," said a statement from the company. "The Beaumont chemical plant has completed a safe and systematic shutdown of its units."
The company said it is "communicating with federal, state and local emergency planning officials about measures we are taking to prepare for continued heavy rainfall."
The Houston area and regions east of the city have been slammed with heavy rain from Imelda for several days, including some 20 inches or more in places like Winnie and parts of Beaumont. Houston's main international airport was closed and many schools are shut.
Exxon's 362,000-barrel-a-day Beaumont refinery is 90 miles east of Houston.
